Hellllllo my chapter lovelies!

Already in the third month of the year, I feel like my "One Year to Lead" is quickly slipping by. I know, I know.. it's only March. But you can only be President once, and I want to make the best of it. There are so many things I want to try, do, see, teach, learn.. it is so overwhelming. But mostly, I want to make my chapter proud and help us become better active citizens..  are you willing to help me out? 

Recently Nina and I traveled down to St Louis for Leadership Training University held at JCI/JCI USA Headquarters. That's the international & national headquarters - how freaking cool is that. The history nerd in me was amped to see the original creed, the sign-in book with visitors from around the world, and the collages of Jaycee history. It was so amazing to experience. Plus, I not only got to hang out with our State President Becky Bradl, but also spoke with our NATIONAL President Jennifer J. Ray. What a feeling to know that the National President of the Jaycees wanted to know what's going on in our chapter.. what our chapter was like, what we struggle with, what we succeed at and most importantly how can she and her team can help. We are not alone in our mission to better our community, there are chapters across the world filled with young professionals who are doing the same thing we are. Stop and think about that for a minute, the impact it should have on you about how big the Jaycees really are. I met Jaycees from Texas, Missouri, Illinois, Arkansas and Indiana...all doing fantastic projects for their community. The main idea we discussed was about sustainable solutions for problems in our community. What does that mean to you? What problems in our community do you think we could really make a difference? Does anyone have ideas to help make this goal a reality? Consider joining me on our Active Citizen Framework committee... shoot me an message to show interest or we can meet up and discuss. 

It's time for Sheboygan to break out of the box a bit - we  do so much for our community's organizations and people, but what ELSE can we do to have a long-lasting effect?? C'mon people - lets do this. I know we can be even BETTER citizens for our city. OH yeah almost forgot, banana.

14th Annual MN vs WI Jaycees Chili Cook-Off
March 14 • Shiner’s Bar & Grill in Lakeland, MN

An Annual Tradition continues, but this year with a twist! We have invited our neighbors to the south to participate! Let’s see what Iowa can bring to the table! Whether you enter a Chili, come to sample and judge, or both (hint-hint), it's sure to be a great time! Proceeds will be divided between the states to be donated to each states chosen charity (MN will donate to Confidence Learning Center).
  • Cost: $5 donation for judging/sampling chili (Additional voluntary FUN activities may be added to increase fundraising potential)
  • Categories: Mild/Medium, Hot/Spicy, and Most Original. There will also be a “Presidents Choice” winner selected. Please bring enough for sampling.
  • Date: March 14th, 2015
  • Time: Noon Arrival and chili warm-up; 1pm tasting/judging begins
  • Place: Shiner’s Bar & Grill; 157 St Croix Trail N.; Lakeland, MN

JCI Wisconsin Mid-End Convention
September 11-13 • Best Western La Crosse

Join chapters across the state as we gather in La Crosse to celebrate the success of our membership and organization in 2015! Hotel rooms are available within the JCI Wisconsin room block of $85/night for Standard Room with Double Occupancy (plus taxes). To ensure rate & availability, book your rooms within the JCI Wisconsin room block by August 11, 2015. Registration fees are as follows:

The JCI Twinning Program is a voluntary and reciprocal agreement between national organizations or local organizations in different countries, regions, or cities. The motivation to twin originates from the members in two national or local organizations who wish to establish a mutual understanding and friendship. The objective is to exchange personal visits, ideas, projects, and culture. With modern communication and transportation systems, distance is no longer an obstacle. For this reason, twinning is easier now than ever. The program formally links two or more JCI Organizations and provides a framework for members to participate in other cultures. They forge diverse connections that provide a unique perspective on the increasing interconnectedness of our world. These experiences produce a deep understanding of the importance of diversity and global cooperation. Apply today to be considered for the Twinning program. Tourney of Taverns • May 2, 2015

Cheers everyone!

The 5th annual Tourney of Taverns is coming up on Saturday, May 2nd. It will be a day filled with friendly competition in various drinking games such as beer pong and tip cup and a few non drinking games such as pool and darts. So start thinking about getting a team of 3 together. The cost is $30 per person. This includes your beer during the games, transportation to all the bars throughout the competition, a hearty meal and all you can drink beer that evening. The theme for our teams is "Classic Games Clash." You can pick what classic game -- video, board, etc -- you want as your team name and, if you want, dress up as that game! There will be a prize for the best costume so be creative! 

If being on a team doesn't trip your trigger, but you still want to be part of the fun or maybe just watch others compete, then game monitor is the role for you! We still need a few game monitors to watch the players compete and keep score of that game. It is a lot of fun watching how silly people get amidst drinking games! As a monitor you too will get dinner and beer that evening for free. 

So how do you get to be part of the fun??? The registration forms will be available mid March. I will send a group email once it's available. Meanwhile, get your team figured out. If you would like to be a game monitor let me know. Whatever role you choose, I guarantee you will have a great time!

We need your stuff for the Jaycees rummage sale!

Although Saturday, June 13 feels like a loooong way in the future, now is the time to start thinking about the Jaycees rummage sale because we need your stuff! Many of us are cleaning and organizing our homes this spring, so now is the perfect time to set aside items to donate to the Jaycees rummage sale. This will be an awesome fundraising project with proceeds benefiting local charities. If you have any questions please contact Ashley Yurk at ayurk@hsabank.com or 920-207-0893.

Brat Days • July 30-Aug. 1, 2015

Fellow Jaycees,

Thanks to those who joined us thus far to help organize Brat Days, there is still time to get in on the action. Please consider joining the Brat Days Committee as we still have some spots left and can use the help. Most notably, we are looking for someone to train to take on the local parades from Sarah; also Nicole could use some help in the field house organizing things and preparing some things for the food area.

Dominion of Terror • Weekends in October

Hello everyone!
If you have not heard, I have the honor and privilege of being the 2015 Dominion of Terror Chairman. I am so excited!!  I have so many new thoughts and ideas. Our first meeting this year will be Tuesday March 17th at 6:30 at the DOT. It will be cold, so dress warm. This is the most important meeting of the year. We will go over all of this years expectations, new room ideas, and all of the information you are going to need for this entire year. I would like some feedback on this day as well. New ideas from you would be awesome! I want to know what you thought worked and didn't work last year. So please plan on attending. If you are interested in building a room this year, the room builders sheet must be filled out by this day and brought to the meeting. If you can not make the meeting, but want to build a room, please have the sheet filled out before this day and give it to me. No verbal commitments please. 
SO excited for this year, hope you are too!!  See you on March 17th!!

Do you ever wish that you could sport your favorite Sheboygan Jaycees Fleece, or look around for your Sheboygan Jaycees winter hat, but then realize you don’t have one? Well… you’re in luck. I will be looking into what it would cost for different items that have the Jaycees name and logo on it. I will hopefully have more information at the next meeting in regards to what and how much.

Thank you to all the people who came out to show our Jaycees love to Chissy’s. It was a great night and many laughs were had.

Chairing 101 • Thursday, March 5 @ 6pm • QVC

Are you looking for some helpful tips and insight about what it takes to run a project? Learn how you can take your involvement to the next level and be the chairperson of a project. Your journey as a Jaycee can give you the skills and experience to become a strong and confident leader. Join us for this training session lead by Jodie Zajkowski on "How to be a good chairman and run a good project."

Chili Cook-Off • Thursday, March 5 during Chapter Meeting

Show off your chili making skills at the March chapter meeting! Prizes will go to the top entries with the most votes. This is open to all chapter members, no need to pre-register. If you have any questions about our chili cook-off please contact Ashley.

Snow Tubing at Sunburst • Saturday, March 7

We're taking a trip to Sunburst to go snow tubing on Saturday, March 7. This event is open to all Jaycees and guests. The cost is $16 per person and we're leaving at 10:30 am from the Memorial Mall parking lot. Nina will have a sign-up sheet at the March chapter meeting. Share on Facebook! Happy Hour • Tuesday, March 10 @ 6pm

Originally we were planning on doing happy hour at The O in Sheboygan Falls for an open mic night. Unfortunately that event is not available, at least this month, for us to go to. So please join us at Bourbon Street Pub & Grill (1536 Indiana Ave, Sheboygan) on March 10th, at 6:00 pm. Bourbon Street is a consistent sponsor for Brat Days and DOT so we would like to give our thanks and support back to them for it.

Admirals Game & Foreigner Concert • Saturday, March 21

For those of you who have been at Chapter meetings the past few months, you know that Brian is organizing a Sheboygan Jaycees night out on Saturday, March 21 at the Milwaukee Admirals game with a Foreigner concert after the game. Thank you to everyone who signed so far and we still have room form more! There is no limit as to how many people can go so hey, the more the merrier! To secure your spot you need to give Brian $20 per ticket at the latest by Friday, March 13. A great opportunity to pay for your tickets would be at the next Chapter meeting on Thursday, March 5. If you can't pay in-person, you may send Brian a check to 129 Chippewa Drive, Sheboygan Falls WI, 53085. Last bit of detail - there will be an optional dinner at Grafton Water Street Brewery prior to the game. If you'd like in on that, just let Brian know so he can make dinner reservations. Game starts at 7:00 and we'll likely do dinner around 4:00/4:30.

Participation Incentives

Did you know that every time you run a project, attend a meeting, or participate in our events that you are working your way towards the chance to win fabulous prizes? Throughout the year Ashley Yurk is tracking the participation of all chapter members so that at our banquet in January we convert the points into tickets that can be used to enter into drawings for tons of awesome prizes. We've had prizes such as Coach purses, power tools, tablets, gift cards, gift baskets, and much more. So be sure to sign-in at every meeting or event in order to earn as many points as possible.   3. How long have you been with the Sheboygan Jaycees? A little over two years as a member, but I have been volunteering for events for probably around 5 years.
  4. Tell us a little about your project: This year I am starting a community rummage sale as one of my projects. I hope to bring out the community support in donating and in purchasing items. Hopefully it’s a great turn out for the new project. Not only will be it a great way to give to charities, but anything that isn’t purchased will go toward one of the thrift store in the area as well. I am excited to see where this project takes us.
  5. What was the first project you chaired/would like to chair? The first project I chaired was Turkey Baskets. It really is a great project and makes you feel good to see the faces of the people you are helping to bring joy to during the holidays.

Hello all!  

I had the pleasure of attending the Wisconsin Jaycee Convention in February. I cannot tell you how much fun I had learning about the Jaycees and all of the different things you could be as a Jaycee. Oh, and the stuff we did outside of the convention was pretty fun too.

So on with upcoming changes that are happening in membership. I talked a little at the last meeting as to how our renewals are changing to quarterly. I will be sending out emails shortly if your renewal is in the months of April, May, or June. If you have already paid, I thank you very much but please be on the lookout for those emails. 

Also, last month we started making phone calls to members inviting and reminding you about the meeting, this will continue and I hope to continue to have a great turnout at all of our meetings throughout the year as we had at the February meeting. 

Don't forget you can bring a friend with you to the meeting as well and if they join up later you can earn $20 in Chamber cash for sponsoring them. 

On a side note... I am looking forward to the Chili contest at this month's meeting!

Greetings fellow freiwilliges (volunteers in German)! We have some great events planned the next couple months that you should know about.

The 11th annual Unity Music Festival is an event that raises money for the Sheboygan County Cancer Care Fund by holding a concert/show featuring the "Garth Neustadter Trio", Kevin J Sievert, Rebecca Charboneau, and the "Trinity Irish Dancers". It will be held at the Stefanie H Weill Center April 11th 7pm.

Easter Bags for Project Angel Hugs
4-6pm on Thursday, March 19
Chairperson: Nick Schmitz

We will be heading out to Plymouth to help Project Angel Hugs (406 East Mill Street, Plymouth WI 53073) make Easter Bags. This is an easy and fun event that brings out the kindergartner inside you since you'll be decorating paper bags with markers, crayons, glue, and of course glitter to make them fun and eye-popping to a child that is currently in the hospital. These decorated bags are later filled with toys and goodies and handed out to each child.

Easter Baskets • Sunday, March 29

It is HOPpening! Jaycees Easter baskets will be March 29th. We will be meeting at Julie Turner's house (3151 North Avenue, Sheboygan) at 2:30 for box decorating and filling of the yummy and fun Easter items. I will have treats for the helpers as well :-) At about 4:00 pm we will divvy up the baskets and deliver to the 15 needy families. This is an outstanding event that helps out our local neighbors who greatly appreciate the help.Anyone who has signed up to deliver only can meet at my house by 4:00pm. We already have lots of volunteers but can always use more. Julie will send the signup sheet around one more time at the March meeting! Thank you in advance to all of my Peter Cottontails!

Jaycees Scholarship

The Sheboygan Jaycees Foundation offers two $1,500 scholarships each year to Sheboygan area high school seniors (schools included: Sheboygan North, Sheboygan South, Central, George D. Warriner, Sheboygan County Christian, and Sheboygan Lutheran High Schools). The application deadline is April 6, 2015. Learn more at SheboyganJaycees.com/Scholarship. The scholarships are presented in May at the awards ceremony at each recipient's school. Selection is based on community involvement, community service, leadership roles, and volunteer activities. We will be looking for members to join the scholarship committee soon. If you are interested please contact Kellie or attend out next Chapter meeting for more information.

Pitch, Hit, & Run • 9:00 am on April 11

Major League Baseball Pitch, Hit & Run (PHR) is a FREE, exciting skills event providing boys and girls the opportunity to compete in four levels of competition including Team Championship events at all 30 Major League ballparks and the National Finals at the MLB All-Star Game. The Sheboygan Optimist Club and Sheboygan Jaycees are teaming up to host a competition right here in Sheboygan at the Field of Dreams (Jaycee Field)! This 1-day event is open to boys & girls ages 7-14 with separate baseball and softball divisions. Volunteer to help with the event.

The March Warm & Fuzzy is going to be a 50/50 raffle. Half of the money earned will go to a very lucky attendee of our March Chapter meeting, while the other half will go to Project Angel Hugs of Plymouth. $1 = 1 ticket, $20 = 25 tickets.
Remember... service to humanity is the BEST WORK OF LIFE... so let's donate what time we've got - to better not only our lives, but the community at large.
