The Installation Banquet was awesome! Props to Kate Whitson for doing such a great job. Also congrats to all the award winners and raffle item winners of the evening. Despite the fact that I woke up that morning to discover I had lost my voice, I fortunately was able to squeak out my speech but it may have been tough to hear! For your reading pleasure I am featuring my speech as my article this month.

Have you ever described your role in the Jaycees as being a volunteer? If you take away just one thing from my speech I hope that it is the understanding that we are so much more than simply volunteers. The Jaycees is a leadership development organization. We are leaders and active citizens. As global citizens, we all have rights and responsibilities, as well as shared goals. Through active citizenship, we enact our sense of social responsibility to work towards these goals and benefit communities worldwide.

In January I was fortunate enough to be able to participate in the Jaycees Local Presidents summit in St. Louis. There are more than 650 chapters in the United States and I was honored represent Sheboygan as one of less than 90 local chapter presidents in attendance. Over the course of 3 and a half days we learned about a variety of topics such as the Nothing But Nets campaign, the Active Citizen Framework, and the Passport to Civic Leadership just to name a few. We also got to visit the JCI headquarters where I had my picture taken next to the very first Jaycee creed banner. But by far the most valuable thing from the entire weekend was connecting with my fellow Jaycees from all over the country.

Sometimes I think we can get in a rut with our perspective of being in small community so the opportunities that Jaycees offers to interact with people outside our typical sphere of contacts are often just the thing to help us expand our horizons. There are numerous regional, national, and international events that take place throughout the year that every Jaycee is able to participate in. I truly believe that when it comes to making the most of your time as a Jaycee you will get out of it what you put into it. So don’t let the fear of trying something new hold you back. Go out there and be an active citizen, be a leader!

The January Chapter Meeting Minutes are available at

Well Hello Everyone!
The Brat Days committee last met on January 16. We certainly have a lot of work ahead of us especially now that we are officially into 2014. Brat Days is only 7 months away (well, slightly less), so we’re poised to hit the ground running with further planning and preparation!
The one area seeing the most activity recently is the booking of entertainment. One of the bigger bits of entertainment news is we are bringing back The Happy Schnapps Combo! They will be performing two sets on the Variety Stage. The Brat Eating Contest will also take place at the Variety Stage. So the plan is the contest will take place between Schnapps’ two sets, plus one of the Schnapps band members is going to emcee the contest!
I’d like to congratulate Buddy Isbell for volunteering to organize the Brat Trot, Kris Pluskat for volunteering to organize Marketplace, and Jason Bohlman for joining the Manpower team! Way to go! This year’s committee is a truly fabulous group of people. I’m thankful to have them all on the team. If you are not on our fabulous committee, you really should join us! Here are some committee vacancies we are looking to fill yet:
  • Field House Operations
  • Brat Days Parade
  • Quiver Runner*
*Quiver is an iPad/iPhone app that we can use to track food sales. The idea is to have someone deliver food slips from our food stations to the operator approximately each hour and then enter the sales info into Quiver. This is a tool we believe is going help evaluate our food sales activity in greater depth. This year would be the app’s beginning/experimental year. We already have a volunteer to be the app operator – congratulations and many thanks to Eric Leuck for wanting to help! Now what we need yet is someone who is willing to run out to the food stations each hour to pick up food slips they can deliver to Eric.
Of course there is so much more going on in planning Brat Days. Want in more on what’s all happening? Then you should find your way to committee meetings! Our next meeting is Thursday, February 13th, 7:00PM at Weimann’s Sports Center. Drop on by! You might even find an area you are interested in helping with after you hear news of what all the areas are doing.
Hooray for brats!

Community is ramping up for a great year!

We have a lot of ideas coming down the line that will get us back in the community doing more good.

First, we have our annual fun time at the BBBS Bowling for the Kid's Sake on February 8th. It's always a blast having fun while raising money for this worthy organization. See the details below for more information or contact Paul or Laura Rammer with questions. Otherwise see you on the 8th with your crazy hats!

Next, we are looking for some members to help decide which lucky high school students will get a scholarships from the Jaycees. Kellie Resnick has graciously decided to step up and get this started. Please contact her if want to help read essays and help make a student's life better.

And if anyone wants to join the Community Team, we are planning on heading over to South HS on February 9th from 10am-3pm for the Meals on Wheels Love Bowls. $20 gets you all you can eat soup and a bowl to take home. It's a great opportunity to support our local program. See the link: Love Bowls for more info.

In March we will have more opportunities that you can volunteer your time for.. Remember - ..service to humanity is the BEST WORK OF LIFE.. so let's donate what time we got to better not only our lives, but the community at large.
