Yo Chapter!
That’s right, I’m working on breaking into the world of def jamming faster than you can say Yo! MTV Raps©. I’m honing my lyrical Jessie James-in’, so don’t mind if you see me bustin’ out some phat rhymes throughout this article of mine (see, there’s a few now! Did you catch all that?).
We had two fabulous events in June. One truly major event was Golf Days. Congratulations to Becky Mullane and the Golf Days Committee for hosting yet another highly successful event this year! I was there, so I can certainly speak to how absolutely fun it was. I was a hole sponsor (for The Brian Gensch Fan Club) and everyone who passed through my area had blast and good hefty laugh (look - another rhyme). The community always reaps great benefits from this fabulous event. Way to go Becky and the Golf Days Committee!
Another event was the El Camino Dining Club hosted by our Individual Development folks. Many thanks to Jan Skala, Carmen Courtright, and Elizabeth Sullivan for getting us out to enjoy some dinner at this most excellent joint. Burritos, tacos, and nachos… all with Jaycees muchachos (break out the beat box, I’m on a roll) and muchachas. Makes me want to crank up the bass and shake some maracas.
One event I’m sure we are all looking forward to is our July 3rd family picnic right after the Chapter meeting! Eric Leuck has stepped up to chair this event – his very first chairperson role! Way to go Eric! Plus don’t forget we have an appetizer contest at the picnic. So don’t be hasty, bring something tasty (uh wuh uh wuh uh wuh). You just might win!
For those of you who were at the June Chapter meeting, you know about the Brat Days stand chair role filling needs that were expressed by both Tim Harrison and Jan Skala. My fellow members, let’s all come together and show our support for not only Jan, Megan, and Mychal (the Brat Days Manpower team), and Tim (chairperson), but especially for the success of Brat Days by stepping up to stand chair either a food/beverage area or a ticket sales area. Brat Days operations depends greatly on the stand chair positions being filled. Perhaps you are someone who feels uncertain about whether you could take on a stand chair role. Well, you know, The Sheboygan Jaycees is an organization that prides itself on building our members up. Taking on a stand chair role doesn’t mean you are on your own – we are all here to support you! There is training of which you will be given the step by steps on how stand chairing works. Contact any one of the Brat Days Manpower folks to express your interest in stand chairing. Let’s all step up and help make this year’s Brat Days uber successful and have ourselves a blast while we are at it!
One other topic I’d like to present in this passionately crafted lyrical masterpiece of mine is Board elections at the September Chapter meeting. That’s about two months away – already, that time of year is approaching us fast! To be eligible for a Board position, one must be a member in good standing for a minimum of three months prior to election. If you fall into this definition, consider adding yourself to this year’s ballot! Being on the Board is a fantastic avenue for gaining leadership and organizational experience. To see what types of board positions there are, you may find the list of them on this Jaycees wiki page: sheboyganjaycees.com/About .There are even documents on the wiki that explain in greater detail what each position involves - here is the page where you can find the descriptions (scroll down to the 2012 Board information area to find the Word documents): sheboyganjaycees.com/Board+Information. If you are interested in being on the ballot for a board position, please contact me to let me know what position you would like to target and I will be sure to add your name to the ballot for it. We can take nominations from the floor as well at the Chapter meeting. However, if you don’t want to leave to chance whether you would be nominated from the floor and thus want to guarantee your spot on the ballot, let me know any time before the September Chapter meeting.
I’ll be asking you what you think of my phat rap skillz at the July Chapter meeting. I’d like to think my rhymes are worth repeating. For all I know though, you might opt to subject me to a beating (da ding ding dong da ding dong da ding dong).

July 4th Beverage Tent at Deland Park

We will be selling beer, soda, and water to the public on July 4th in a tent provided by the Sheboygan County Chamber of Commerce. We could really use your help, so please sign up for a shift to raise funds for our Chapter! There are four shifts available. The shift that we are in most need of filling is the latest one. Here is the full list of shift times:
  • 11:30am - 3:00pm (sales begin at 12:00pm)
  • 3:00pm - 6:00pm
  • 6:00pm - 9:00pm
  • 9:00pm - 11:00pm
Many thanks to those of you who have already signed up for a shift. We very much look forward to seeing as many of you at the tent that can be there to support our Chapter and our community! If you have any questions or want to sign up, please contact Brian Gensch or Amanda Kohls.

Golf Days 2013 was a success! On Monday, June 17th, the rain held off and the sun came out for 15 teams to converge at Town & Country Golf Course for the 11th Annual Event. It was a great day and everyone appeared to have a great time. Jaycee National President Chrystal Ramsay and her family joined us for the event as she was traveling through Wisconsin on her "Nothing but Nets" tour. I want to thank everyone who helped support this year's event: our Sponsors, the golfers, the Sheboygan Foundation, Town & Country, all our raffle donation providers, our volunteers, and my committee! We were able to raise some money for our charities: Camp Y-Koda and Friends of Kohler Andrae State Park and we were able to have a lot of fun while doing it!

If anyone has any interest in chairing this event for next year, or is even curious about it, please let me know. I would be happy to work with you to make this happen.

Thanks again!

Becky Mullane
2013 Golf Days Chairperson
Hello all!

Updates for everyone regarding the DOT... we will be open in only 100 days. WOW! Time flies! This means several things:

1) 100 days from today is when the Dominion of Terror Haunted House will be open for business. That may seem like a lot of days, but it's coming sooner than you think. There is spectacular progress down at the house already, BUT we could use some extra hands to paint, haul, and staple. Can you manage a couple hours? We are open Monday thru Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. Weeknights at 6 and weekends at 12. An hour or two will make a huge difference in a Room Builder's life :)

2) ZOMBIE WALK - be prepared for Sheboygan to be invaded once again...

3) 100 days... EEEK!! I'm so excited!

BUT WAIT! There's more!

We are having a BIG 'OL Work Day Saturday, July 27 starting at noon. Not only will you get time and a half DOT Hours counted, but Jan has graciously allowed you DOUBLE Jaycee Incentive points for that day too! That's a CRAZY DEAL and something you should not miss.

If you have any questions about the house, please call/text/facebook/cyberstalk me... I will gladly talk it out with you!

Brat Days enthusiasts,
As we are closing in on Brat Days 2013, I would like to make one more request for help from our chapter and roosters in being active in helping us advertise our festival. Whether you can make a comment on our Facebook or Twitter pages, or make a comment on an article related to our festival online, or tell your friends about how Brat Days will be the place to be this year all helps to reinforce the advertising they are already seeing. We appreciate any help you are willing to give!
Now, to recognize the hard working committee members that made Brat Days 2013 happen:
Administration – Jackie Quasius, Amanda Kohls
PR and Advertising – Sarah Schwefel, Kelly Fairchild, Shellie Dontje
Manpower – Jan Skala, Megan Ohland, Mychal Seger
Entertainment – Tom Badtke, Jason Boettner, Brian “GForce” Gensch
Finance/Treasury – Steve Beine
Parade – Pam Greger

Family Area – Dustin Stielow
Main Food – Kyle Aguirre

Grounds – Jim Fanslau

These 19 individuals, or about one third of our chapter, should all be commended on a job well done! It has always amazed me how a small group of volunteers is able to coordinate and execute a plan of the scale of Brat Days, and for 60 years this model has withheld the test of time. You should all be proud of your achievements in getting us to this point, and I look forward to the Saturday night of August 3 as we all celebrate Brat Days continued success together!
Tim Harrison
2013 Brat Days Chairman

Last time you really needed help, who did you ask?

That is the first sentence of an article I read recently called "Finding the Hidden Value in Your Network." I found it to be particularly relevant to the types of connections you might make through the Jaycees. This is just one of the great articles I've found in "LinkedIn Today." If you haven't created a profile on LinkedIn yet, I strongly encourage you to do so. You'll meet lots of people during your Jaycee career and it's very likely that some of them will become valuable professional connections. Keeping in touch with your professional connections is exactly what LinkedIn is about.

Also, be sure to follow our new LinkedIn page: linkedin.com/company/sheboygan-jaycees

The Sheboygan Jaycees Foundation offers two $1500 scholarships each year to Sheboygan area high school seniors. Applicants submit essays and letters of recommendation. Selection is based on community involvement, community service, leadership roles, and volunteer activities. The recipients of the scholarships this year were Eric Feudner (South High) and Tshachee Lee (South High). The chairperson of the scholarship review committee was Paul Rammer, please contact him if you have any questions about the scholarship program or if you are interested in being on the committee in the future.

Upcoming Community Events:
  • July 14 - Maywood 30th Birthday Party.  As a member of the Sheboygan Jaycees, we are always invited to participate in events at Maywood. For the birthday party they are in need of volunteers to help run the event. Shifts are available from 12pm to 6pm, talk to Laura Rammer to sign up.
  • August 17 - Chalk It Up. This is a brand new event that is taking place at the Mead Public Library and consists of artists that pay an entry fee to compete for prizes in a chalk drawing competition. Mari Rose is the chairperson and she is looking for Jaycees to help with running the event, contact her for further info.
  • September 7 - Big Brothers Big Sisters 5th Annual Showdown in Cheese Town. In previous years this event was a kickball tournament, but this year it will be a volleyball tournament. We are in need of a chairperson to put together a Jaycees team, so please let us know if you are interested!
  • September 28 - Walk to End Alzheimer's. Join the Jaycees team to raise awareness and funds to fight Alzheimer's disease. Together, we can advance research to treat and prevent Alzheimer's, and provide programs to improve the lives of millions of affected Americans. Contact Brian Gensch to join our team.
