Solidarity gatherings and rallies have been held across Australia. In Melbourne, 3000 community members met in Princes Park, South Caulfield wearing red to declare #CodeRed #StopThe Rockets and support Israel.
Dr Danny Lamm, Zionist Federation President said:” Israel faces a battle on three fronts. The battle front in Gaza, the home front and the global front where the legitimacy of her operations are questioned. It is imperative that the world hears the truth and understands that Israel is acting in self-defence.”
Zionist Council of Victoria President Sam Tatarka said: “Israel has an obligation to defend its citizens and is acting as would any other nation on Earth.  Millions of Israelis live in constant fear of attacks with as little as 15 seconds to find shelter.
"Israel builds shelters from missiles for its people while Hamas uses its people to shelter its missiles" he said.  He led the crowd with the chant “Stop the rockets, Peace Now!!”
In Sydney 1500 attended The Central Synagogue to show solidarity with Israel. Israeli Ambassador to Australia, His Excellency Shmuel Ben-Shmuel sent his condolences to the families of those Australians killed when flight MH17 was shot down over the Ukraine.
He went on to say that: “In response to increasing aggression and ceaseless rocket fire from within Gaza, the Government of Israel has been forced to defend itself and its people from further acts of terror. Operation Protective Edge will continue until it reaches its goal – restoring quiet to Israel’s citizens for a prolonged period, while inflicting a significant blow to the infrastructures of Hamas and the other terrorist organisations that threaten our State.
“The ultimate sad truth of Israel’s predicament is that if Israel were to lay down its arms tomorrow; she would be destroyed. But, if Hamas were to lay down their arms, there would be peace.”
Ben-Shmuel concluded his address with “For all those gathered here today, we thank you for standing with us during this moment of difficulty. Your support is a source of encouragement, your compassion a source of comfort, and your solidarity a source of hope.”
In Perth a crowd of over 400 gathered in the city centre in Murray St Mall to call for an end to Hamas terrorism. The Peace Rally drew from many different religious and ethnic backgrounds with one thing in common, a desire to see peace in the Middle East and the end of terrorism.

Australia recently welcomed six Madrichim from the Arava for winter camps with Habonim, Netzer and Betar. It was an incredible experience for everyone involved.
Caden Feldman-Gubbay the Mazkir (Chairperson) of Habonim said that – “My passion and connection to Israel really clicked again on Habonim Dror's recent winter Machane (camp). We were lucky enough to be given the opportunity to have two incredible Madrichim (Noi, 23; and Aviram, 22) join us from Israel to help us manage our 150 odd Chanichim. The two are from the Arava in the Negev and brought with them an infectious passion and energy that injected the whole camp with an Israeli presence… The Israeli Madrichim's knowledge on everything Israel was astounding and our Bogrim body (senior Madrichim) also learned a great deal from them.”
Noi along with her fellow Madrichim have returned to Israel, she too could not hide her feelings – “For me to be Madricha at Habonim Dror camp in Sydney was a really unique experience. As a youth instructor here in the Arava I’m working all the time with teenagers and in a movement and I felt that I really explored a whole new world there (in Australia.) I realized how much you can do with teenagers, what level discussions can go up to. I learnt a lot of new stuff about Judaism, Zionism and more that I’m just waiting to bring to my kids here also. It was really special to talk and explain about the Arava to people who maybe never heard about it before. I feel like it really interested everyone.”
Caden found the quiet moments the most poignant – “More personally, I found the truly special moments of camp to be the smaller conversations I and others had with the Israeli Madrichim. It may have been simply chatting to both Noi and Aviram, rekindling the love of Israel over some hot Turkish coffee that Aviram brought with him, or playing acoustic guitar and singing the beautiful song kol galgal at havdallah. The hours spent practicing our Hebrew, learning about beautiful tiyulim (hikes) to do in Israel, arguing about which hummus place is the best and even about the Arava's prized purple capsicum crops made every one of us feel that much closer, that much more a part of Am Yisrael. There is no book or text or experience that can create a personal connection to Israel as honestly, strongly and genuinely as simply being in Israel. And while we could not have possibly brought our winter camp to Israel, Noi and Aviram managed to bring a little piece of Israel to our winter camp. A Habo Machane is always an incredible experience, and thanks to our amazing new friends from the Arava, this one will be unforgettable.”
The partnership continues with the recent arrival of the Arava delegation from the Acacia school here to participate in school programs both in Melbourne and Sydney.

AUJS & Hagshama have just completed an amazing experience of 10 unforgettable days on Taglit Birthright. It is a 10 day free trip to Israel for people who are Jewish and are looking to reconnect with their Jewish Identity.

The situation in Israel was tense - they have experienced what Israel is all about... Sirens, Bomb Shelters, IDF soldiers who left their groups early because they were called back to the army etc... They also saw how the media around the world is misleading…

As part of the program, participants are allowed to extend their stay in Israel up to 3 months. Despite the situation, more than 90% of the Hagshama Taglit Birthright group decided to stay there. Robbie Flint's (Bob) – (Hagshama Taglit Birthright Participant) - friend Itai Avisar from Melbourne Australia wrote this beautiful song to Bob so that he stays safe with high spirits. MUST LISTEN!
KangaRrusski are still in Israel at the moment enjoying the experience! They had a great time in Eilat (yes! You can be jealous!) and in the Negev desert, riding camels and sleeping in the Bedouin tent. Now they are heading to Jerusalem. Waiting for the next update from the Holy City!

The role of Israel in Jewish education is a key theme to be explored in this year’s Zionist Federation of Australia’s Jewish Educators’ Conference and we are delighted that Israel’s Minister for Education, Rav Shai Piron will be coming to the conference and to Australia as a guest of the ZFA.

The conference will be held at Mt. Scopus College, Melbourne on 17-18th August.

Every two years, the ZFA hosts the Australian Jewish Educators’ Conference – a unique forum for several hundred Jewish educators who seek professional and personal development in a stimulating environment.

This conference is however open to all members of the public and community that would like to learn more about education and Israel. We have participants of the Zionist Youth Movements whom will be on seminar in Melbourne attending the event and encourage anyone with an active interest to register and attend this stimulating two day conference.

The website has now gone live so please visit the site and register your attendance. We look forward to seeing you there http://educatorsconference.zfa.com.au
