The Kearney Center has compiled all the most important information for this week in one place! We want to make finding information easy for you, so we've put all important announcements here in this of the Kearney Center Current Student Newsletter. Please remember that Monday, May 25th is Memorial Day. Most offices and businesses are closed in observance, including the Kearney Center. 

Kearney Center Open Sessions

Every Wednesday, Kearney Center staff will be available to talk through concerns, questions and policies for one hour. Find more information on our calendar.

Food Assistance

  1. Campus Cupboard New Hours:  During the Corona pandemic the Cupboard is open Tuesdays from 11:00 1:00 for select-your-own foods. On Thursdays from 9:00 – 11:00 AM. The Cupboard offers a prepackaged box of food. Have your student ID with you.
  2. Bridges Pantry: Please see below for details.
  3. The Kearney Center updates our social media frequently with offers and help that we hear about. Follow us on Facebook and Instagram.

Counseling Center

The Counseling Center will be open for clinical services Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 8 – 2 for the ten week summer session (week of May 18 through July 24); we will re-open full time the first day of classes Fall Semester. You will likely be receiving another email from me closer to fall with the services we will be offering. 
We are continuing to offer online screenings, individual counseling, and workshops on coping with anxiety as well as coping with depression over Zoom. To be eligible for these services, students must be in the state of Minnesota and enrolled at MSU any time during the summer session (we will provide consultations and referrals to students who do not meet these criteria). Additionally, we have a few “on demand” presentations that students can view at any time posted on our web site:

International Student Emergency Assistance Grant 

Global Education and the Kearney Center are excited to announce the International Student Emergency Assistance (ISEA) grant available to F-1/J-1 students currently enrolled at MSU, Mankato. 

To be considered for this funding opportunity, you must:

·         Meet with your immigration advisor to receive a recommendation

·         Demonstrate financial need through the grant application process

·         Be in valid F-1/J-1 status

·         Be currently enrolled in a degree program at MSU, Mankato

Grants range between $100-$1,000 depending on financial need.

Immigration Updates

  • NOTICE about KCISS Forms: If you have a KCISS form that needs to be processed (i.e. I-20 Travel Request, CPT form, OPT request, Transfer Out request, etc…), please send your immigration advisor an email with your fully completed form, and any other necessary documents (if applicable). Please allow 3-5 business days to have your documents processed. KCISS Forms can be found HERE.
  • Graduation: If you are graduating this May 2020, below are a few considerations/options you may have—
    • Interested in applying for OPT?
    • Accepted into a new Degree Program for Summer/Fall 2020?
      • If you are looking to Transfer Out your SEVIS record because you have been accepted into a new program at another institution, you will want to complete a Transfer Out FORM and provide your immigration advisor with an acceptance letter.
      • If you have been accepted into another degree program at MSU-Mankato, you will have to complete the I-20 Request FORM
  • Summer Curricular Practical Training (CPT): Before submitting CPT documentation, it is recommended that you talk with your immigration advisor to talk about if you are eligible. If you are eligible, you will then need to submit the following items to your immigration advisor:
    • Job Offer Letter that includes the following:
      • Dates of employment
      • Hours you will be working
      • Roles/Responsibilities
      • Printed on letter head and signed by hiring manager/supervisor
    • Register in an internship course for Summer 2020
    • CPT FORM completed by you and your academic advisor

Campus Updates

Library Return and Renewals: If you are registered for Summer or Fall classes, you will be able to renew library materials until August 17, 2020. This includes laptop computers from the Library, which are normally not renewable.
  • Laptops distributed by IT Solutions -- similar policy applies. You should have received an e-mail from IT last week with detailed instructions and will receive a Library notice as well. If you are registered for Summer classes, you can renew the IT laptop, if not, it needs to be returned by May 15 as instructed. (*Library system couldn’t set a due date after grading day, so laptops will show as due on May 11, but no late fees as long as returned by May 15.)
  • Need a book for the summer, but aren’t taking summer classes? Ask to be switched to Community Patron status so that books can be renewed. (Laptop computers and other equipment cannot be checked out or renewed with a Community Patron status).
  • Interlibrary Loan: Items received from other libraries using our ILL service, do not have to be returned until end of semester (May 11), regardless of original due date. If you need the book for the summer, it can be renewed.

  • Want to return books but are not in Mankato? If you need to mail library materials back to the library, please send your full name and mailing address to to receive a prepaid mailing label. (Does not include international postage - If the book is not in the US, renewing until they return is the better option.)

Remote Access to a Doctor! When MSU Health Services is closed, you have a remote option through your insurance plan to talk to a doctor.  It is HealthiestYou Telehealth.  1-855-870-5858    You will need your insurance ID number which is on your card or your account with UHC Student Resources.  This is free for anybody on UHCSR.    To access your card, go to    This is a great option for nights, weekends, winter break or when you are traveling.

COVID-19 Hotline: If you have concerns about COVID-19 (coronavirus), please call the student health services hotline at (507) 389-5591 to discuss your symptoms. They also have a COVID self-check on your Patient Portal to enter symptoms and receive advice.  If it has been determined that you should be tested for COVID-19, the International Student Insurance is waiving any deductible or copay costs.
