Honoring Juneteenth
The Galveston Tri-Weekly News, which printed General Order No. 3 on June 20, 1865, the day after it was issued. Texas Newspaper Collection, Briscoe Center for American History, UT Austin
"The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of personal rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and hired labor."
- Major General Gordon Granger, June 19, 1865

Welcome To The NurseGrown Newsletter!

I am once again off to California's beautiful Emerald Triangle - this time to work on an educational collaboration with the good folks at Ganjier, with whom I became the first nurse certified Ganjier. A Ganjier is to cannabis what a Sommelier is to wine.

Also, as you'll see below, we're still battling our credit card processors. So please be patient with our little family business. We're doing the best we can to take care of you and your health.

Most importantly, though, we want to honor Juneteenth - now a federal holiday - and recognize that we are still battling the legacy of slavery and white supremacy to this day, and cannabis is a significant part of the ongoing struggle.

There are so many people still serving long - if not life - sentences for selling or possessing minor amounts of cannabis. We're talking $20. We're talking one joint. There is no way that's not wrong, and we will continue saying so until all cannabis prisoners are freed!

With love and solidarity!

June 6 - National Cancer Survivor's Day
- Christine Lee, BSN, RN, PHN (she/her)

When I was fighting cancer, all my other life problems went away. My sole focus was survival and survival alone. I didn’t work. I didn’t date. I didn’t get involved with family drama. I let some bills slide. When fighting cancer, I viewed life through a tiny tunnel with the light of survival at the end. All that mattered was getting through the narrow, rocky passage to the other vibrant side.

While fighting cancer, I made it a point to be mentally as strong as steel. I had built walls around my emotions to maintain fight mode. Once the cancer disappeared, I had to figure out how to let the walls down and be a regular vulnerable human.

And then I was tired of being depressed; Tired of being afraid. I realized that fear wasn’t going to make me live longer regardless of if the cancer returned or not. Therefore, I better live every day to the fullest and do everything I want to do while I still can.

Keeping It Clean: The Value Of Full Panel Testing
- Jessilyn Dolan (she/her)

As a nurse and patient advocate, I believe consumers don’t have enough information on all the available cannabis products, and don’t know what questions to ask to ensure they are choosing safe or clean cannabis products.

ISO, the International Organization for Standardization, is the gold standard for laboratory testing certifications. ISO is an independent, non-governmental international organization where 164 different countries bring together experts from all over the world to develop international standards.

Many companies advertise independent third party lab testing with ISO-accredited labs. However, as we dive deeper, and look at the reality of what is being tested, and the available test results, we see how consumers are being misled to believe products are safe, when in reality, only the CBD or THC has been tested and confirmed. To ensure product quality and consumer safety, a full panel lab analysis is necessary.

What is Clean Green Certification?
- Jessilyn Dolan (she/her)

Started in 2004, Clean Green Certification is the largest nationally recognized third party certifying body for cannabis.

Clean Green(CG) upholds some of the highest standards in the cannabis industry for organic practice, modeled on USDA National Organic Program, sustainable farming, and international food safety and handling specifications.

To be Clean Green Certified - as we are - means a grower and processor has passed a rigorous review that proves they uphold sustainable and responsible practices coupled with organic inputs, legal compliance, consumer safety and transparency.

Reach out, show some love, and let those who have been wrongly incarcerated for cannabis know that they are not forgotten, they are not truly lost amongst our outdated, punitive, and racist correctional systems.
