Variation in upward Income Mobility in the United States
Research on economic mobility shows that the odds of someone moving from the bottom 20 percent of the income distribution to the top 20 percent varies tremendously across different metropolitan areas in the United States.  Metropolitan variation has to do with the quality of local schools, the level of local income and racial segregation, and the extent of sprawl.
