Welcome to the 1st Annual PAESTA conference!

The momentum and excitement are building up for a significant step in promoting excellence in Earth & space science teaching in Pennsylvania, the first annual PAESTA conference!  On Friday evening, October 12, and Saturday, October 13, fifty Earth & space science educators will gather to share best practices, classroom teaching strategies, and scientific updates in the fields of energy, astronomy, and plate tectonics.  With the confernece theme of Linking Earth and Space Science Instruction to Career Opportunities, the conference will kick off with a powerful talk from the American Geosciences Institute about geoscience career and workforce data - a perfect lead-in to Earth Science Week.  Be prepared to be inspired by our sessions detailing innovations in teaching and learning in classrooms across Pennsylvania.

Friday evening - SWITCH!

We kick off our conference at 6PM on Friday evening with a special screening of Switch: To A Smarter Energy Future.  Switch is a film, web and education program to build energy awareness and efficiency, and find practical, balanced solutions to our energy challenges.  As only 40 colleges/universities from across the country were selected to show Switch, we are thrilled to be able to present this special opportunity.  For those of you that are coming to campus immediately from work, we will have a food truck in the campus parking lot to grab a sandwich and other food items for purchase for dinner.  Friends, family and colleagues can attend Switch without attending the Saturday sessions but must register for the movie screening at:

Saturday - Technical sessions

Registration begins at 8:30AM, with the keyonte starting promptly at 9AM.  You will receive a copy of the schedule when you arrive Saturday morning, but you can access the schedule with full session abstracts on our website.  We hope that if you are attending with a colleague, you will "divide and conquer" which sessions you attend, as there are multiple sessions to choose from throughout the day.  Please note that the session after our keynote is a working session for the entire group, our lunch is a working session to review and provide feedback on the PAESTA website, and the 12:45PM cemetery session will be held in a Cumberland Cemetery, located across the street from campus.  The conference will conclude with a raffle and Free Cycle, which you won't want to miss!

Free Cycle

Are your storage areas at school cluttered with science equipment that is in good shape, but no longer in use?  Are you struggling to find the funds to purchase that one item that would make your new lesson complete?  Well, we may have the answer!  During the annual conference, we will be conducting our first Free Cycle.   The Free Cycle is easy... bring an item, take an item.  We are looking to create a system where PAESTA teachers can exchange quality science products that are currently not being utilized for other products that you have been without.  Unload all of those supplies from your old curriculum and scope out what interesting pieces are available to replace them.  In these tough economic times, this is a great way to supplement your curriculum with quality products while clearing out some of the clutter.  Please note that items purchased with school/district funds cannot be exchanged, only materials supplies that you own/purchased yourself may be traded.

Additional details

  • Conference attendees may bring laptops/iPads to Saturday's sessions.  To access the internet at Penn State Brandywine, you will need to sign up for access on site.  Please arrive to campus at 8:30AM so that your internet access can be set up on your device in time for the keynote lecture.  You will need to show your drivers license to receive access.
  • Coffee/tea and food will not be available in the morning - you are certainly welcome to bring your morning beverage to drink during the sessions.  Vending machines with beverages and snack food are available all day, and a free lunch is being provided.
  • Everyone will be asked to complete a conference survey right before the end of the conference.  The survey data is extremely important for PAESTA as we move forward as an organization.  We thank you ahead of time for your thoughtful feedback.

Use this conference as an opportunity to become involved!

At the conference, you will learn about several opportunities to become involved in the leadership of PAESTA, as well as opportunities to be featured on the website as a Featured Member or PAESTAR and/or to have your curricular innovations highlighted online.  However you feel you can best contribute to PAESTA, we welcome your time and energy!
