Year 2016 Highlights

ABCD enrolled a total of 905 children in 2016. Of these, 866 had their first dental appointments, thanks to our dedicated ABCD dentists in Thurston and Lewis counties.

Of the 905 referrals received, 743 came from dental offices, 49 from Head Start, 41 from pediatrician offices, and the rest were referred through other organizations. We are thankful for all the wonderful partners who collaborate with us in reaching families to improve oral health in young children.

In the Spotlight:
Preschoolers Meet the ABCD Tooth Fairy!

In October, Lewis County ABCD Champion Dr. LouAnn Mercier (of Valley View Health Center) and ABCD's Tooth Fairy Laura Spoor (of CHOICE, pictured at right) visited the Centralia College Head Start/ECEAP program. Preschoolers were overjoyed at the sight of the real Tooth Fairy! Dr. Mercier volunteered her time providing free dental screenings to kids, while Laura handed out dental goody bags, reminding kids to brush twice a day to chase away the sugar bugs. Dr. Mercier and Laura also provided this service to families during preschool story times at Lewis County libraries.

The following dentists were trained in either or both ABCD and Interim Therapeutic Restorations (ITR):

Thurston County: Dr. Chelsea Todd, Dr. Mikael Kautsky, Dr. Stephen Smith, Dr. Daniel Blackner, and Dr. Tyler Tebay (all by Dr. Scott Rowley)

Upcoming Trainings & CDE Credit Opportunities

ABCD Provider Certification
We would like to remind our ABCD dental offices that any new provider joining your team is required to go through ABCD certification (Phase 1) training in order for your office to receive the higher rate for services rendered to children below age 6 with Apple Health (Medicaid) insurance coverage. This requirement applies even if an ABCD training was previously held at your office.

The next Certification Training will be held on April 21, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. at Small to Tall Pediatric Dentistry, and will include the optional ITR (phase 2) training. 3 credits will be given for ABCD Certification, and 1.5 credits given for ITR. Expand Your Practice With Apple Health
Earn one hour of continuing dental education credit by watching this short video from the University of Washington. Appropriate for dentists, hygenists, and dental assistants, this video is hosted by Dr. Joel Berg, and will give you some pointers about how to make Medicaid work for your office.
