CPAA Council learns about tribal health care
The American Indian Health Commission for Washington State (AIHC) planned and facilitated a regional meeting for the tribes in the area to meet with CPAA leaders. The goal of the meeting was for CPAA members to learn about tribal health care and the cultures of the tribes in the region, and then discuss possible opportunities for working together. Read more >>>

Youth Marijuana Prevention and Education Program begins Year Two
As the second year of the Youth Marijuana Prevention and Education Program (YMPEP) gets underway, the Washington Department of Health (DOH) is focusing specifically on policy, systems, and environmental change efforts. The CPAA brought together regional partners to collaborate on this project with administrative support from CHOICE Regional Health Network. Year one of the region's program focused on community training in the areas of community organizing, cultural competency, substance use awareness, and strengthening families. Read more >>>

Local Community Update
Cowlitz County was recently featured in the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's Culture of Health online publication. Specifically, the Take Back the Light neighborhood event was highlighted as an example of the Self-Healing Community Model, which has led to improvement of several community health factors in Cowlitz County over the past 10 years. Health Care Authority Updates

Sentinal Network:
The Healthier Washington Inititiave is currently recruiting volunteer health care employers for a project that will help track Washington's rapidly changing health workforce. As a Sentinel, you will:
  • Help ensure the state’s health workforce is prepared to respond to changes in the healthcare environment.
  • Get access to current and actionable information about emerging workforce needs.
  • Compare your organization’s experiences and emerging workforce demand trends with similar employer groups.

Supportive Housing Webinar:
Initiative 3 of the global Medicaid waiver includes targeted community supports for supportive housing and supportive employment services. This webinar is an opportunity to hear from national experts on the importance of addressing homelessness and long-term unemployment as we prepare to address whole health. Global Medicaid Waiver Webinar:
The next Medicaid Transformation webinar will be Thursday, Aug. 4, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. This webinar will include updates on negotiations with the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services (CMS), and each of the waiver's three initiatives. Register to participate here. Read about the Medicaid Transformation waiver here.

Plan for Improving Population Health:
The Healthier Washington Plan for Improving Population Health team is currently developing a Roadmap website, to be released August 9th. Danette York, Director of Lewis County Public Health, serves as CPAA representative on the Plan for Improving Population Health Advisory Work Group.

Paddle to Nisqually
The annual Pacific Northwest tribal celebration is happening now! Enjoy traditional stories and culture shared through drumming, singing, and dancing, plus vendors and lots of food! 

There are landings at various locations around Puget Sound through July 29th, with the final landing at the Port of Olympia on July 30th. The Nisqually tribe will then host a week-long celebration on the Nisqually Reservation.
