Auto Insurance Rate Increases

Auto insurance rates are rising. I know, my rates for my own car have risen too. Here at the office, we have daily conversations with clients about why rates are increasing and do we have a lower rate with another carrier. Since we haven’t spoken with everyone (yet), I wanted to highlight a few of the reasons why we’re seeing unprecedented rate increases.

1.) People are driving more. Maybe it’s the cheap gas. Maybe it’s because cars are more comfortable. But driving is up 3.5% from 2014 to 2015.
2.) There are more new cars on the road. We set a record here in the US with 17.5 million vehicles sold in 2015. New cars have advanced technology with more sensors, and features that simply cost more. Aluminum and high strength steel cost more to repair than regular steel. I used to roll down my window to adjust my outside mirror. Now that “same” mirror can be adjusted electronically, has a turn signal light and will automatically defrost when I turn on the defroster.
3.) Accident frequency is up 3%.
4.) Traffic deaths have increased 7.7% from 2014 to 2015.
5.) Bodily injury costs paid related to automobile accidents increased by 32% between 2005 and 2013.
6.) Total-Loss claims have risen 12.7% between 2013 and 2015. Airbags and the advanced technology in new cars only add to this problem.

Finally, in my own humble opinion, the # 1 reason for the increase in Auto rates is due to DISTRACTED DRIVING due to cell phone use. Drivers are simply taking their eye’s off the road for an extended period of time and having accidents at 50 or 60 mph. Sure, we had high speed accidents before the invention of the smart-phone, just nowhere near the high numbers we’re seeing today.

Owning a Home Safe & What to Store In It

If you don’t own a home safe, it might be time to make the purchase. Not only can they help with theft of valuables or family heirlooms, but they can also protect special documents. A home safe is priceless when the unexpected occurs. Documents and valuables can be kept out of harm should you ever experience a home fire or burglary. These reasons alone should be a good motive to invest in a home safe.
