Dear Truro Family,

What a joy it was on Sunday when it was announced that Jamie Brown would be Truro’s new rector and the congregation erupted in applause and cheering!  As you heard, the Search Committee unanimously voted to recommend, and the Vestry voted unanimously to call him as your new leader. Bishop Guernsey gave his enthusiastic approval, as well.

Jamie and his family will return from vacation this Sunday; I know you will welcome him enthusiastically as your Rector-elect. I look forward to seeing and hearing what God does in the weeks and months ahead as Jamie moves into this new role.

I will remain as your priest-in-charge until September 18. That afternoon, Bishop John will relieve me of my spiritual authority as your interim leader and give full spiritual authority to Jamie as rector. Jamie will begin this ministry in the way he begins most things: in prayerful preparation. The wardens have granted him time away for prayer until the end of September. He will return for the parish picnic on October 2.

I cannot begin to tell you how much I have enjoyed being your interim leader, even as we have faced challenges together. Your love for God and your desire to please Him, your enthusiasm for worship and your care for one another have been heartwarming and inspiring. Sunday after Sunday, I have thanked God for the privilege of serving you. As my time has drawn to a close, I have heard many of you have described a deep sense that God is leading Truro into a new and fruitful season. That will certainly be my prayer for you all.

This Sunday, I will be spending a long-planned weekend with my family, but I hope to see many of you at my final Coffee and Conversation at 9am on September 11 in Common Grounds. I’ll make a few observations and leave plenty of time for your questions or comments.  Listed below are a few other upcoming dates:

Sunday, September 4:  Jamie returns from vacation; Mike preaches; baptisms at 10am

Sunday, September 11:  Jamie on prayer/preparation retreat through September; Mary preaches; Coffee and Conversation

Sunday, September 18:  Mary’s last Sunday; She preaches and leads New Members’ class

Sunday, October 2:  Jamie returns from retreat and preaches; Parish picnic

Sunday, October 23:  Bishop John formally institutes Jamie as Rector of Truro Anglican Church.

With love and gratitude,

This Sunday our 8 AM chapel service will return to its usual time of 7:45 AM, and we will continue to have one service in the sanctuary (and online) at 10 AM.

Seniors Lunch resumes Wednesday, September 7 at 12 PM in the Undercroft. We’ll eat together ($5) and then watch and discuss Season 2, Episode 1 of The Chosen, a television show exploring the life of Jesus. Each episode is written to stand alone, so don’t let unfamiliarity deter you from joining!  Register here. If you would like to be included in weekly Seniors emails, contact Rev. Mike Seawright.

Bekah Johnson is the new Director of Dance Ministry. She grew up in Shoreview, MN and received dance training at a small Christian dance studio. She danced tap, jazz, and ballet, throughout middle and high school. Between her junior and senior years of highschool she participated in a mission trip with YWAM called Summer of Dance where she trained in various dances for a month in Montana and then participated in a month-long mission trip that utilized dance as a form of outreach in Thailand. She attended Bethel University in St. Paul, MN where she was on the dance team her freshman year. She earned her B.A. in TESOL from Bethel and her M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Minnesota. She stayed active in dance throughout her young adult years by exploring different styles of social dance and occasionally dancing at her local church. She can be seen dancing most often in the front row of a worship service. After nearly 10 years of teaching ESL in various public schools in MN and VA, Rebekah now primarily focuses on raising her three young boys, serving in the church, and taking/teaching fitness classes. She lives in Fairfax with her husband Matt and their three sons.

Family Ministry: We are looking for volunteers to help one Sunday a month or every Sunday for a month, or more if you are able. We need volunteers to help children (K-6th) in Truro Kids during the 10 AM service. You will finish in time for communion.  Click HERE to register your interest. Check all the opportunities that interest you and one of our directors will be in touch with you to start the process of serving our children. We have some urgent needs:

  • We are starting a new 2’s and 3’s class in September; however, we need one or two extra assistants or parent volunteers to help us during the 10 am service. Or maybe you want to come hold babies in the nursery.

  • We also need one or two people to help hold and play with little one in support of TIPS parents attending class on Tuesday and Thursday. This might be just the place for you to help!

Receptionist: We are looking for a volunteer receptionist on Wednesday or Thursday from 9 to 2 or available to substitute on Monday or Tuesday. Would you be comfortable answering the phone and directing calls? Are you someone who can welcome visitors to the parish office and answer questions they might have about Truro? We’ll teach you everything you need to know. This is a great service opportunity for someone who doesn’t work during the day. Contact Maggie Marcum to find out more.

TIPS: Truro International Programs & Services is Truro’s ministry to internationals, and we have ways for everyone to be involved!  Do you speak English? Are you friendly? Then you are qualified to be an assistant in our ESOL classes – no prep necessary! You could also serve as a Greeter, help with special events, or provide lunch for one or more classes. Do you have professional skills that you could share (legal, job search, etc)? Would you be willing to donate to our scholarship fund? Or are you a prayer warrior who could join our prayer team? Whatever your gifts, we have a place for you!  Sign up HERE or contact Myra Hinote for more info.

Truro Jail Ministry: Truro Cares is launching a new ministry outreach effort, Truro Jail Ministry. The Mentor Training Refresher Course (via Zoom) will start Thursday September 22, and continue every third Thursday 7:30-8:30 PM, to prepare men and women to teach and facilitate classes and mentor inmates. For more information contact Vic Rinaldi or Maggie Marcum.

Did you know Truro has a Buildings & Grounds Committee? In the coming weeks, they will be sharing some of the recent improvements that have happened around our campus. Many were long overdue. As always, thank you for your generous giving that allows us to maintain our wonderful property!

It’s difficult to see what is not there, but if you look closely at the Van Dyke property it should look a bit more open. This is because the Men’s Ministry recently completed two projects there; removing an old shed on July 23 and clearing bamboo and brush on August 20. Expenses were minimal; it was good exercise; and most importantly, no one got hurt. (See last week’s Truro News for pictures.)

Moving on to projects you can see. If you take a walk behind the main church, you will see a new fence enclosing the playground area. Truro Preschool and Kindergarten paid for the installation of the fence and as part of an Eagle Scout project on August 20, our Boy Scout Troop installed the gates. While you are out back, if you look at the shed in the back corner of the parking lot, you will notice it has been spruced up with a new coat of paint and other repairs. Courtesy of our Boy Scouts and their leaders.

Next Up:  In preparation for our Fall Parish Picnic, a Truro Gardens Fall Cleanup is scheduled for October 1 from 9-11 AM. All volunteers are welcome!

We welcome donations of flowers in memory or in honor of loved ones. Please click HERE if you would like to order flowers for a Sunday Service.
