Update for volunteer coordinators

Dear <<First Name>>:

I hope that you are all staying safe and well.

Please find some VC-specific updates below with more successes and news from the Glass Door team further down.

New befriending scheme: We now have enough befriending volunteers registered and the scheme launched in its pilot phase last week. Thank you to everyone who spread the word and registered interest themselves. Read about why we are launching the scheme

Volunteer survey: The results are in! 1,664 volunteers were registered between May 2019 and May 2020 and you encouraged 334 to complete the volunteer survey. We found that:

  • 98% of volunteers were satisfied with their volunteer experience

  • 97% would recommend Glass Door as a place to support or volunteer

  • The majority thought that our frequency of communications was just about right. We appreciate all you do to ensure the messages and updates are being passed on to their teams. If you have any concerns, feedback or tips on our communications, please do get in touch.

Best,

Megan for the Glass Door Team

Casework and shelter updates:

From caseworker Michelle:
A female guest, who stayed in our shelters two years ago and who I supported to find accommodation through the council, has just given birth to a baby. I arranged for the Helping Hands organisation to supply her with essentials she needed such as baby formula, nappies and wipes. I could hear the joy that this new little life is bringing her and it lifted me up during lockdown.

From caseworker Lewis: I helped two agency workers access the furlough scheme after their request to be furloughed was initially rejected. I supported one man to access temporary accommodation and am in the process of finding accommodation for another man whose housing was linked to his job in hospitality and who has now lost that job due to coronavirus.

From caseworker Patricia: I have helped guests make successful universal credit claims as well as pre-settled status applications over the past few weeks.

Other news:

Record number find shelter: Despite the shelter season being cut short by two weeks due to the coronavirus pandemic, more people turned to Glass Door and stayed in the shelters this winter than ever before. Find the full round-up of shelter stats in our online report.
Glass Door on TV: COO Lucy and Senior Comms Manager Melissa appeared on the BBC on 3 May to talk about why more support is needed for people experiencing homelessness. Lucy also voiced her concerns for EU nationals facing homelessness on Euronews. Catch the BBC coverage and the
Euronews video

No Going back: St Mungo's have started a campaign calling on the Government to take action so that the people currently in hotels can be helped off the streets permanently. Thousands will have to go back to the streets unless we join together and fight for their right to safe housing. Add your voice to the campaign

New guest stories
Jimmy (pseudonym) has been in the UK for 18 years but is not eligible for assistance from the state. He was homeless for three years before finding Glass Door. Read Jimmy’s story

Anthony and Nicole (pseudonyms) met while homeless and have been supporting each other ever since. Now they are in a hotel. Read Anthony and Nicole’s story

We are hiring: As the economic impact of the coronavirus pandemic hits, we expect more people will turn to Glass Door. In line with our pre-pandemic plans, we are now recruiting a fundraising officer and a senior finance and resources manager to help ensure the charity is prepared.
Find out more and share with anyone you think would be appropriate.

Fundraising superstars of the fortnight: Mylo Michael and his friends challenge you to film yourselves keeping a football up for as long as possible then donate £5 to Glass Door and nominate five more people. Join the challenge on Instagram.
