News and Updates

Dear <<First Name>>:

We are a month into shelter season already and it isn't too long until Christmas. Thank you so much for all of your hard work over the festive season which can be a particularly difficult time for people without a fixed abode. Below is a list of updates that we encourage you to share with your volunteer team. (If you would like to include messages in future postings, please do let us know.)

Christmas Menus
It might sound odd but we would advise that volunteers don't provide too much extra-special Christmas food to guests over the festive season, to avoid disappointment. Many guests receive lots of food by daytime services over the Christmas period, especially from 23-29 December while 'Crisis at Christmas' is open, and often arrive at the night shelters feeling full. Some venues have historically even chosen to provide a lighter meal over this period, such as soup and sandwiches. Whatever you decide, the main message is to prepare your volunteer teams for the likelihood of guests being less hungry than usual.

Free pizza
Franco Manca are offering free pizzas to some of our night shelters this Christmas. Check the Franco Manca website to let them know you’d like a delivery.

Extra helpers at Christmas
We have been arranging cover volunteers for shelters who have requested additional help over Christmas. If you have some extra helpers this Christmas time, don’t forget to register them, even if they just join you for one shift. They can register at glassdoor.org.uk/forvols or fill out a paper form at your shelter.

Volunteer registrations
Please check that your regular volunteers have registered - we have a particularly low number of registered volunteers this year so we think that many volunteers have yet to be registered. We are sending out a Christmas thank you message to all registered volunteers this week and don't want to miss anyone off the list.

M&S food collection opportunities
Neighbourly have been in touch to offer us the following regular food collection opportunities:
M&S Green Park - Monday to Saturday during the day, Sunday at 6pm
M&S Swiss Cottage - Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday during the day
M&S Hampstead - Tuesday to Sunday during the day
M&S Paternoster Square - Sunday at 6pm
Please email me at megan@glassdoor.org.uk to arrange this.

Shelter update:

  • Demand for shelter is now very high with all circuits operating at full capacity and a two-week long waiting list for spaces for men. Women are likely to be accommodated more quickly.
  • Thanks to rapid, calm responses from shelter staff, several medical emergencies have been quickly resolved, including an epileptic fit.
  • At least two guests have independently moved onto hostels from the Hammersmith & Fulham circuit. This is credit to Will and the team for providing a much-needed period of stability and safety for the guests.

Casework updates:

  • Kensington & Chelsea: A guest who was being supported by the Connection at St Martin’s has started working as a parking attendant and has now moved on from the shelter. Another guest has arranged his own reconnection to Italy and a guest from Romania has just finished a Silver Service course with Crisis.
  • Hammersmith & Fulham: A couple, who caseworker Mash was supporting, have moved into accommodation. A female guest who left the shelter following an incident has stayed engaged with Glass Door and, with LawStop’s help, has now been placed in temporary accommodation.
  • Richmond: A female guest has been accommodated by the Home Office and has told Glass Door that she wants to thank Keith and the wider team for all their assistance.
  • Wandsworth: Caseworker Patricia has supported one shelter guest to move into accommodation.
  • Outside the shelters: A Czech gentleman who initially missed his connection in Paris has now been successfully reconnected. Senior caseworker Neil has supported a Polish guest to apply for a passport and says: ‘he can now start applying for Settled Status and begin the journey off the street’.

Other news:

  • Our Christmas Appeal: we have now raised almost two thirds of our target amount of £60,000 and are working hard to raise the full amount before Christmas. Visit the appeal page here to read why former guest James is fronting our campaign.
  • John Pilger’s film ‘The Dirty War on the NHS: Glass Door shelter manager Ben Davies and shelter venue, St Barnabas Clapham Common, feature in John Pilger’s new documentary film, ‘The Dirty War on the NHS’. The film will air on ITV on Tuesday 17 December at 10.45pm. Find out more.
  • Glass Door shelter manager on BBC Radio London: Last Sunday morning there was yet another media appearance from Glass Door's shelter manager Ben Davies. He was interviewed for BBC Radio London where he discussed Glass Door's Christmas Appeal and the wide variety of people he has met who turn to a Glass Door shelter. Read the story and listen back to the interview.

Upcoming Events:

  • Throughout Dec – Church of Latter Day Saints ‘Light the World’ Giving Machines: Exhibition Road, South Kensington: ‘Vending machines’ will be set up where passers-by can ‘purchase’ items with donations going to Glass Door and four other charities. If you’re passing through, check them out.
  • First Thursday and Third Friday of every month – Charity Book Sale: Moravian Church, Chelsea: Glass Door has recently been selected as joint beneficiary of a long-standing second hand book sale in the local community. Runs from 11-3pm every other Thursday and is well signposted from the Kings Road. Find more info.
