Team and Leadership Aha’s! – October 2013
Once some one said, we have an amazing brain that starts working when we wake up and keeps going until we go to work! We go into boredom when work starts and wait to go home to make model aircrafts, write epic poetry or re-build a business process. Most employees wait for 5 pm or the weekend and that's where they come to life … there is mass re-incarnation.
During my regular coaching sessions a common challenge leaders bring to me for guidance is how do I keep my team members engaged. They tend to lose focus. They tend to be interested in other things even during work. So let me share with all you leaders, from my experience this month, what steps you can take as a leader or a team members to keep your team or yourself engaged.
As a Team leader:
Help your team members find their personal purpose for life [a personal mission statement]. This energizes and engages them. Visit my blog and follow this link to find out how to find a personal purpose: http://ranjandesilva.wordpress.com/2012/07/04/living-purposefully-path-to-success-and-happiness/
Show how their current work will help them to get to their purpose. It could be directly if the personal purpose is in the same industry or arena as your organizations. It could be indirect when the industries are not the same but yet he/she can learn leadership, management, customer service, networking, selling, and build a fund to realize the purpose. See my article: ‘Getting that dream job’ on http://ranjandesilva.wordpress.com/2012/06/08/getting-that-dream-job-3-simple-steps/ for more on this.
Help get to the purpose by providing relevant jobs, projects and/or training that is related.
Care for them as you would care for someone close to you.

Help yourself get to the purpose by learning on the job, asking for lateral movements to broaden your experience, looking for projects to get involved in within your organization or in social associations and seeking continuous self assessments and training that is related.
Care for yourself enough to make those sacrifices needed on behalf of your purpose.
Aha’s from October 2013
Aha’s – having a learning that helps understand life and purpose better.
We started our 4- day Mastery of Self through NLP playshop for the public on the 14 & 15. The reason participants are highly engaged and energized for 10 hours a day is because of the positive energy, thoughts and action created. The participants find their purpose and learn the tool to realize it and this generates amazing positive energy that keeps them going for the 10 hours. The session featuring the Senior Partner of Sensei International, Omar Khan who was to conduct two half-day mega events on the 28th of October was postponed due to a medical emergency he faced. We all felt that it is almost impossible for Omar Khan to have a medical challenge, given his positive mind-set and heart-set and this came as a wake up call to all of us. It was a wake up call and reminder to all of us that we are not infallible and while we do our best to add value to this world through living our purpose, we need to have faith in god [or universal energy system]. It was also wonderful to see the almost 300 participants who were eagerly awaiting the event, were supportive of us during this challenging period. The new dates of the event is 21 January 2014. The morning session is a corporate event titled ‘Top Performance through Top Teams’ and the afternoon session is an event designed for our Mastery Graduates titled; The Heart and Soul of Real Communications. http://www.sensei-international.com/services/learning-events/
While I had many consulting/ training interventions in addition to my leadership role at Apollo Hospitals Dhaka, during the month, the highlight was a session I did in Dubai yesterday for a global leadership team of a top multinational company in creating a ‘Winning Culture’. I find this type of session brings out the best in me because guiding world-class leaders need world-class processes, a world-class mind-set and world class thinking.
