Team and Leadership Aha’s! – July 2013

Everyday is a learning opportunity and the month of July 13 was no exception. I am happy to share the Team and Leadership Excellence AHA’s for the month. An Aha is a term we use at Sensei to describe a new learning inspired by any event.

I started the month delivering the final day of ‘Personal Excellence’ for GPIT in Dhaka. This is a part of a process designed to bring about a positive corporate transformation. The session was highly energising that gave an excellent start to the month.

Aha: Doing energising work at the beginning of a new cycle [year, month, week, day] gives us so much energy to do things superbly for the rest of the period.

Then I travelled to Sri Lanka to guide Pearson Lanka part of Pearson Education one of the leading educational publishers in the world taking content online. The first session was between the top team and next team to agree on the leadership competencies for the company. The top team and next team had worked on them separately and my role was to help find common ground. It was amazing to see that 3 of the 4 competencies selected were common and agreeing on the 4th one was quite smooth.

Aha: When teams are driven by a set of values and principles they will be aligned on such important aspects even if the thinking happened separately. Getting alignment on areas of difference becomes so much easier.

The next two days was a leadership excellence workshop for the management team of Pearson Lanka. This is a part of a process that started with leadership assessments and a living the values workshop and consists of more workshop and coaching sessions for the participants. It was really refreshing to see how these leaders were so keen in finding answers to improve themselves based on the leadership assessments.

Aha: When development processes are holistic and is based on robust assessments it creates engagement, enthusiasm and real change.

Next I delivered the last 2 days of Mastery of Self through Neuro Linguistic Programming (MS - NLP) in for Ranbaxy Pharmaceuticals. The participants returned after a month after the first 2 days and listening to the break-through, growth and improvements they had achieved was really energising. This helped to take them to the next level of mastery in these final 2 days.

Aha: Using knowledge to improve self energises self and makes taking the next quantum leap even easier.

The next day I travelled to Dhaka to continue to lead the team at Apollo Hospital. Every moment of this assignment is growth giving.  This month was really fulfilling as we started working on drastic improvements that required the support of most of the team. The process in progress and we are learning, course correcting and deciding every step of the way.

Aha: Change requires listening, understanding, being flexible, patience and course correction all the way so that everyone involved in a change process supports the effort wholeheartedly.

I received the news on the last day of the month that my hospital has won a top award of excellence among hospitals in Asia. I am not allowed to give details until the awards are presented in September. But this created so much energy, excitement, happiness and confidence in the team – a manifestation of a lot of the leadership work done during the last few months.

Aha: Great efforts leads to great rewards not just tangible but also intangible.

On the personal side I was able to take some free days during the month and spend some time with the family. At the end of the day we do what we do for our loved ones and spending time with them is the greatest reward.

Aha: What ever we do, what ever challenges we have , what ever we achieved the family, the greatest sources of inspiration needs to be protected.

They do it because they feel it’s the right thing to do.’

  • ‘Courage: What will it Take for us to Display More of it?’

‘Watching Malala Yousofzai speaking at the UN on her 16th birthday about a year after she was shot on the head and neck by the Taliban, motivated me to write this blog on Courage...

Courage is the ability to decide and act righteously even if everyone else is opposed. This is important to all of us as it will help create the right culture for our families, societies’, organizations, countries and the world. This will help us march together towards our dreams.’
