Dragon Journeys

People used to take Dragons on long journeys - sometimes racing, sometimes just going places by boat. The New Orleans Dragons did a long distance race to Biloxi in 1956; the Vancouver Fleet used to sail to Seattle for racing before the Interstate was built; and there were passage races around the Great Lakes in the 80s. In that spirit, a number of North American Dragon owners have been undertaking trips by Dragon. Last summer USA315 Beowulf, a 1948 McGruer was moved down the coast of Maine, and this summer USA35 Frolic, a 1951 Westermoen did a trip around Bainbridge Island. Both trips had their challenges (open ocean in parts off Maine and a Seattle convergence downpour off Bainbridge), but both were adventures to talk about on those long winter evenings.

Racing Update

We had a fantastic summer here in the Pacific NorthWest (best I can remember), but the summer season is pretty much over and now it's on to autumn sailing (better winds for us). 

The Vancouver Fleet had it's best season in years with 8 Dragons out most Wednesdays and 9 at weekend regattas. And success breeds success with several people looking to join the fleet next year (and one restoration nearing completion) so we're expecting fleets of 10 or more in 2015! Competition continues to be tight with Eagle, CAN122 winning most weekend events and Aryborn, CAN145 most of the Wednesday events. The Fleet ended the summer with their traditional weekend at Centre Island. This fun weekend includes regular racing plus single-handed racing as well as crew races. And, of course, a great party and some interesting libations (Dragon's breath anyone?).  A great end to a great summer.

In Cleveland, the Dragon Fleet races on Sundays and Wednesdays, with the top spot going to USA261, The Schmucks (who also won Cleveland Race Week), followed closely by USA261 Blow Me.


Most Dragons in the Toronto area race PHRF at various Clubs (RCYC, Etobicoke, Niagara on the Lake). A cooler and windier summer around the Great Lakes favored the Dragons in handicap racing.

Wondering Where to Fly your 85th Pennant?

My flag protocol expert tells me that the 85th Dragon pennant would be suitably flown from the port spreader halyard as a "house flag". You can rig a halyard to do this or you could attach the pennant to the port outer shroud. Any Club Burgee would be flown on the starboard side. In either case they should only be flown while the ensign is flying and only from dawn to dusk. And of course, no flags are flown while racing. I'm sure we will get comments from those flag protocol geeks out there...

85th Anniversary

To celebrate the 85th year of the Dragon, NA Dragons are holding a lottery for Members every three months. Our third winner is Blan and Julie Page, of Mobile AL who are the owners of Controlled Abandon, USA262 a 1971 Borresen.
