Hospitality Newfoundland and Labrador's (HNL) Annual Conference and Trade Show

Big Erics attended HNL's Annual Conference and Trade Show which took place February 26-28th!


The four Big Erics representatives in attendance were (from left to right in the photo above) Jason Whalen (Sales Representative), Todd Pennell (Western Regional Sales and Service Manager), Frank Murphy (VP, Sales), and William Fudge (Sales Representative).  The representatives used this considerable opportunity to promote Big Erics' products, to learn about trends within the NL hospitality industry, and of course, to create lasting connections with other professionals within the industry.

This year, Frank had the honour of presenting the Restaurateur of the Year Award to Chef Roary MacPherson.  Congratulations Chef MacPherson!


Frank also received his own award.  He was presented with an Appreciation Award from the Restaurant Association of Newfoundland and Labrador (RANL) for Years of Outstanding and Dedicated Service to Newfoundland and Labrador's Restaurant and Foodservice Industry.  Congratulations Frank, it is well deserved!

We would also like to congratulate all of the winners at the HNL Awards Gala (for the full list of winners, click here) as well as Clarence Foley of Foley's Cleaning, who won our prize draw for a Henckel's Knife Block Set with 4 bonus steak knives!

A big thank you to Hospitality Newfoundland and Labrador for hosting the show again this year, it was once again a great success!

Freshii

On February 24, the newest Freshii location opened in Moncton, New Brunswick!


Freshii is a franchise that's committed to providing healthy food options that are fresh, convenient, and affordable.  The menu consists of salads, burritos, wraps, rice bowls, yogurts, breakfast and soups made with high-quality ingredients.  They also offer catering, and online and mobile ordering.  Freshii in Moncton will be serving alcohol in a few weeks time; it is the first Freshii location to do so.  They will also be offering products that are local to the east coast, such as lobster and other seafood.


Phil Ridgway is the franchisee of Freshii in Moncton and he will also be opening a Freshii in Newfoundland.  Phil majored in Finance at St. Mary's University and has worked in the insurance and supply chain industries for many years.  He's also worked in the Middle East for several years before returning to Atlantic Canada.  Phil saw Freshii featured on an episode of Undercover Boss and recognized an opportunity in the food service industries of New Brunswick and Newfoundland, where there has been a lack of really affordable and healthy food options.  The feedback he's received since opening has been tremendously positive.  Customers say that this franchise is exactly what Moncton has needed, and they've been pleasantly surprised by how affordable the healthy (and tasty!) food actually is.

Big Erics supplied this location with all of their smallwares and restaurant equipment, including refrigeration, shelving, a Stoeling soft serve ice cream machine, juicers, blenders, steamers, and much more!  "Kelly [Manager of Big Erics in Moncton] has been phenomenal; I couldn't have done it without him!" enthused Phil.

Community Involvement

Metro Turning Point

We recently donated a 100 cup coffee urn to Metro Turning Point, which is a facility of Shelter Nova Scotia that provides emergency shelter for men experiencing homelessness.  Pictured below is David Green of Big Erics presenting the coffee urn to a representative of Metro Turning Point.  For more information about the facility, check out their website here!
