Dear Neighbor:

Many Old Braeswood residents have recently received emails from “Beautify Old Braeswood” (email: or from the committee's Chairman, George Hittner, personally.  Many of these messages have been critical of the POA, the Executive Committee, or other committees of the POA. Some of you may have been confused by these messages or wondered why the Executive Committee has not responded. While we disagree with the content of these messages, we have largely remained above the fray and avoided responding because we do not believe our role is to engage in a public, divisive, and negative email campaign against our neighbors. Nor is it appropriate to comment on issues concerning specific neighbors or their properties.  Simply put, our job is to focus on improving this neighborhood.

Here are a few of the projects we’ve been working on this year:
  1. We recently held our first Park Party since the beginning of the pandemic, which saw tremendous turn-out and was a wonderful way to bring back the spirit and warmth of Old Braeswood.
  2. We welcomed 14 new Old Braeswood neighbors recently at a new neighbor coffee gathering at the VonGreisman/Jackson’s house.
  3. We appointed an Ad Hoc Committee to listen to residents about their experiences with ARC and to make recommendations for improving the ARC process. Their 6 recommendations were adopted by the Executive Committee and published to the neighborhood this month. We are working to implement them over the coming months.
  4. We appointed an Ad Hoc Committee to study the architectural guidelines and to make recommendations for possible revisions to further improve the ARC process for Old Braeswood residents. We view this as a very positive step toward reconciling some of the divisions that exist in the neighborhood.
  5. We created the Old Braeswood Beautification Committee, which is undertaking excellent work to help clean up and improve the aesthetics of our streets, sidewalks, and esplanades. They have hired a gardener whose work has already made a great difference in maintaining clean sidewalk ramps throughout the neighborhood.
  6. The Ad Hoc Patrol Committee has been studying ways to improve safety in the neighborhood.
  7. In this year alone, we’ve helped get 8 new construction and renovation projects off the ground through collaborative meetings and engagements with homeowners, builders, and architects.
We strongly believe that civility and being good neighbors are essential to life in Old Braeswood. Although we may disagree on certain issues or decisions, there is no room in our neighborhood for derision, name-calling, or personal attacks. We ask everyone in Old Braeswood to join our renewed call for respectful and civil discourse with each other.

To that end, the Executive Committee has voted unanimously to remove George Hittner as Chair of the Beautification Committee. We thank him for his service. If anyone is interested in chairing this Committee, please contact me at or the office at In the interim, Daniel Parker will serve as chairman.

In the meantime, we hope you will continue your support of the Beautification Committee’s efforts. All funds donated to the Beautification Committee will continue to be deposited into its separate account and used only for beautification projects.
And as always, if you have questions, feel free to contact the POA by email at or contact any member of the Executive Committee.
Best regards,
Samia Khalil,MD
OBPOA  President
