Ignite Open Mic Turns 1 Year Old
Ignite Open Mic, SoMa’s monthly all-ages performance showcase, produced and presented by SOMCAN’s Youth Organizing for Home and Neighborhood Action (YOHANA), returned with a bang last Friday, June 16th. Themed “Love and Resistance,” the special first anniversary edition commemorated the event’s ongoing success as a supportive space for youth and neighborhood empowerment.

SRO Leaders Training Culminates in Celebration
Stories about people living in SROs (Single-Room Occupancy Hotels) usually focus on the grim experience, loneliness, insecurity, dangers of sexual abuse, and all the health code violations: poor sanitation, bedbug infestations, and mold. But the joyous graduation ceremony – or more accurately, bash –  where 36 SRO tenants celebrated their eight weeks of leadership training with SRO Families United Collaborative, is equally part of the story.

A Look Back at Barrio Fiesta 2017

Barrio Fiesta 2017 was filled with laughter and fun activities for all ages to enjoy. This event recreated the feeling of being back home in the Philippines and brought everyone together to celebrate unity and community. This fun-filled annual event celebrates the strong Filipino community in the South of Market and allowed everyone to relax and have a good time. From the delicious traditional food to the inspiring performances of poetry and song, everyone had something to look forward to.

Organizing Victory: Pedestrian Safety

If you’re walking along 7th & Folsom, you may notice a slight change in the flow of traffic. That may be because, recently, the SFMTA installed a new sign prohibiting cars from making right turns onto Folsom Street when the light is red. This change was advocated for by SOMCAN, working closely with local students and their parents, to help reduce traffic-related accidents and fatalities along the busy intersection.

Renters Unite! District 6 Tenant Convention

Calling all renters! You're invited to participate in a district-wide tenant convention. Come meet with your neighbors, exchange stories and resources, and learn about your rights. We'll have free food, information, giveaways and raffle prizes. A lawyer will be on hand to answer your housing-related questions. Translation will be provided in Tagalog and Spanish.

SOMCAN's 17 Years of Ruckus-Making & Movement-Building (New Date)

Join us on Friday, November 3rd from 6:30-9:30pm for SOMCAN's 17th anniversary dinner and silent auction. Headlined by former California Assemblyman and San Francisco Supervisor turned funnyman Tom Ammiano, we promise a memorable evening filled with delicious food, fabulous auction items, and raucous laughter. The event will be held at The Arc of San Francisco, located at 180 Eleventh Street, cross Howard.

Early-bird tickets will be available beginning mid-July. Proceeds will support SOMCAN’s ongoing anti-displacement work in the SoMa.
