Hi, folks --
In this month's OutCasting OffAir, youth participant Lauren talks about the Women's Marches that have been held in the weeks since the inauguration of President Trump and the connection that these marches have to the LGBTQ rights movement. Have a listen!
Coming up later this month, we'll post a new broadcast episode that will be aired on the Pacifica Radio Network. The current scheduled release date is March 22, subject to change by Pacifica.
This episode is the first in a planned series in which we connect the knowledge and experience of LGBTQ elders with youth. LGBTQ history is generally not taught in schools — what a political hot potato, especially now — and it's not passed down from generation to generation within families. These are just two of the barriers, and so we're working to get some of this history into OutCasting.
In this episode, we talk with Christopher Z. Hobson, a gay elder. Chris's mother was the famed author Laura Z. Hobson, who wrote many successful novels, including Gentleman's Agreement, which was made into an Oscar-winning film in the late 1940s, and Consenting Adult, a novel about a young man coming out of the closet in the transformational years between the early 1960s and the early 1970s.
Consenting Adult is told mainly from the mother's point of view. It is a remarkable book, full of emotional detail so rich that when I first read it, I was convinced that she had to have gone through the experience of having a gay son herself. Indeed, she did have a gay son — Chris — on whom she based character of Jeff, the boy in the book. We are very lucky to have had the opportunity to talk with Chris about his early life, coming out in the 1950s, his early activism, and more. Look for the episode on our web site on or about March 22. By the way, the book was made into a TV film starring Marlo Thomas and Martin Sheen. It's available on YouTube.
Finally, a new article about OutCasting's bureau at Michigan State was published recently by PrideSource. Here it is!
Hope all's well with you. We'll alert you when our Chris Hobson episode is ready and we'll talk to you again next month.
All our best,
Marc and the OutCasting team
