Hi again from OutCasting!
It's September and fall is almost here -- finally! It's been a hot summer, and with no air conditioning, the studio has been hot (well above 100 degrees), so we're all looking forward to more moderate weather. On a couple of occasions, it was cooler outside than in, and we took laptops outside on the landing at the top of the stairs and worked there.
Of course, the heat didn't stop us! With our three part series on the anti-LGBTQ backlash against marriage equality now behind us, we got to work on OutCasting OffAir #5. In it, Westchester OutCaster Jamie talks about working this summer as a music instructor at a day camp for children; one of the kids reacted badly to their upcut (Jamie's gender identity is fluid and they prefer they/them pronouns), and this caused Jamie to reflect on children and their perceptions of gender norms. Have a listen!
Our bureau at Michigan State got off to a slow start last year, but issues have been resolved. We now have four faculty advisors, and they, working with two of last year's participants, have already started outreach to new MSU students. Doug and I will be heading out there in a few weeks to meet everyone and hold a few training sessions, and we have high hopes for great content coming from the MSU Bureau this year.
Finally, we mentioned last month that Sydney, an OutCasting participant in our Westchester studio, was leaving for college. Last night was her final OutCasting session, and we'll miss her.
Thanks again for your support — we greatly appreciated it and hope that you'll remember us in your end-of-year giving plans!
All our best,
Marc and the OutCasting team
