Entrepreneur of the Month: Micah Crowfoot

Building a Business Doesn't Have to be Cookie Cutter
By: Amanda Borisow

Micah is a second year psychology student at CUE with a true entrepreneurial spirit and a talent for thinking outside of the box. She is an artist and has always been driven by her desire to create. Her early stage business, Caw & Crow Curios, is a Japanese-inspired vending machine that encompasses a variety of cultures while indulging curiosity. Her machine boasts one-of-a-kind knick knacks and art, most of which are made by local artists. Her business is in its start up phase with the potential to scale. Micah joined the Innovation Launchpad @ CUE in October 2019 and is planning to compete in pitch competitions and showcase events for further exposure and potentially win prize money to grow her business.

What started as a creative outlet for Micah is growing into a successful business that she hopes can represent many people's points of view, as well as being a creative outlet for local artists and herself. In fact, she's putting out a call to all creators; if this sounds like you, please get in touch with Micah on Instagram @cawandcrow

Micah's Advice for Future Entrepreneurs

Surround yourself with like-minded people, whether that is a mentor, support from friends, family or business centers. It is important to be persistent because there is going to be a lot of no's before you get a yes. It is important to be adaptable and be open to talking to people and sharing your ideas!

Collaboration Opportunity
Mr. Ed Boraas at the Concordia University of Edmonton has developed a machine learning-based algorithm that transforms low-quality CT scan images obtained at low radiation exposure to high-quality images. The algorithm has the capability to learn from a patient’s images and thus can potentially reduce the number of scans required over time. This technology can:
1. Potentially enhance low quality CT scan images
2. Be incorporated as a plug-in to existing infrastructure and clinical workflow for CT scanning in hospitals and clinics
3. Potentially improve workflow efficiency in hospitals by reducing the occurrence of follow-up scanning and lowering levels of radiation dose

We are actively seeking academic and non-academic collaborations for further development of this technology. If this is of interest to you, please contact Isha Katyal, Manager, BMO Centre for Innovation and Applied Research at Isha.katyal@concordia.ab.ca.
