FROM THE PASTOR

BEGINNINGS

Well, folks, here we are once again – another beginning of yet another New Year.  We’ve had a lot of new beginnings lately:
  • A new variant of our “old friend” Covid 19
  • A new set of 365 (every-so-often 366) days
  • A bunch of resolutions to break before month’s end
  • A new president (Who thinks of President Biden as “new” a year later?)
  • One more year to add to our age
  • Schools opening up – shutting down – opening up again
  • A different/new denominational affiliation
  • As I’m writing this – a fresh new snowfall
New Year’s is a great time for thinking about new beginnings.  But perhaps a better time would be Christmas.  Yes-Yes-Yes…I know Christmas and New Year’s come only a week apart.  However the point I’d like to make is that just starting over is wonderful for the psyche and our mental well-being . . . but there is much more to life.
          Real LIFE.  True LIFE.
Let’s think about that for a couple moments.  Because of Christmas, our lives have taken on a new dimension: a dimension in which the Ever-Living God is part of us.  We begin with Jesus’ birth, and allow Him to be born all over again into our lives.  As He comes to us once more, we are reminded that we are spiritual beings, alive with the pulse of the Holy Spirit active within us.  We are brought back to the reality that no matter who the president is, our King remains the same – year in and year out.  The story of that Baby born just a few days ago assures us that our lives are so important to Him, that He has arranged to have us enjoy a Forever-Life with Him.
We can rejoice, knowing that this New-Born King has begun His reign once again with Christmas 2021…and you and I are citizens of His eternal Kingdom.

FROM THE PRESIDENT

A New Call, a new beginning

Dear, blessed Holy Cross family, I think we would all agree that we had an absolutely wonderful Christmas season. I would have to say one of the most joyful and holy Christmas seasons in many years. From the planning and execution of Christmas by the Creek to three services in a row for Christmas Eve, Christmas Morning and the Sunday service on the day after Christmas we had good attendance, great music, tremendous special music and of course the decoration of the Church through all of it. Thank you, thank you all very, very much. The spirit of the Lord was indeed moving through this place. Let’s all pray that this spirit of togetherness and service will continue as we move into 2022.

Our congregation will be starting the call process in earnest right after the first of the year. We hope to get a representative from ELCA to speak to the congregation and take questions as soon as possible. In the meantime we will be holding a planning and organizing meeting on January 15th, (the third Sunday in January) after the service. The first part of the process will be making sure the documents requested by Synod are completed and submitted. These documents include a congregational profile, who are we, what are we like and our strengths and weaknesses. Another document will ask us what we feel we need and want in new pastor. Much of this work was done for the last call we made about two and a half years ago so all we should need to do is update the information since very little has changed regarding the information requested. I know what you may be thinking. A great deal has changed since the last call and that is certainly true. But the questions on the ELCA forms are very similar to the LCMS forms so we need to make sure we update them. That is the first task.

The biggest difference with this call will is that we will receive less than half the number of candidates (6 to 8) and the will all be screened by Synod staff to be sure that they would be willing to be called and that they are a good fit for our congregation. Synod's involvement will be key to helping us make this call a blessed experience and the result, by the grace of God, will be blessing to Holy Cross and our community.

I’m excited to get started. I hope you are as well. Keep praying our Church, the leadership and the Call Committee.
