Sustainability Newsletter Summer 2020

This is the first in what will be a regularly occurring City of Beacon Sustainability e-newsletter.

You received this newsletter because you signed up on the City's sustainability webpage, or asked to be kept in the loop on the Sustainable Beacon survey this spring. If you do not wish to receive this newsletter moving forward, you can simply unsubscribe at the bottom.

What Elements of Beacon are Most Meaningful to You?

Did you miss Beacon's first Climate Resilience Visioning session where we completed the above word cloud? If so, find us at parks and other locations throughout Beacon during the week of August 16-23 to learn about climate resilience and determine the future vision of a sustainable and climate resilient Beacon. We'll be at the Farmer's Market on the 23rd, Memorial and Riverfront Park at various times throughout the week, and the Green Teens market bus on Wednesday!

Don't have time to stop by or afraid you'll miss us? Take the survey online.
Sustainable Beacon Update

Sustainable Beacon is an initiative moving Beacon towards leadership in our area as the “greenest” community in the Hudson Valley. We have established working groups and partnerships among our boards, city employees and community. We presented initial ideas to City Council on July 27. Watch the video of our presentation (starting just after the 34 minute mark) by clicking the photo below:

In addition, the Sustainable Beacon Composting working group needs your help! We are reaching out to request feedback on your experience and interest in municipal composting for the City of Beacon. Have you composted in your backyard? Do you drop off your compost at the farmers market? Never heard of composting before? We want to know! Click here to take the survey. It's fast, we promise!

Sustainability Planning

We are part of a Sustainability Planning Cohort with 20 other cities from around the country. This aligns with Dutchess County's Climate Action Planning Institute, which Beacon is also participating in with 8 other Dutchess municipalities. We have created an inventory of dozens of sustainability actions the City has already taken as a first step. The Climate Resilience Vision meetings will become part of the Sustainability Plan. Stay tuned for public comment and meetings about this Plan in 2021.
