Laughter, memories and soul searching..

The winter for me is a time to reflect on the year gone by, to figure out what worked and what didn't, where we can improve and new ideas to test out for the coming year. After being asked to speak at several local events about my business this winter, I have done some serious soul searching. The last event I spoke at I was asked to touch on "where I came from" and my path to my current business. While this can be explained with a simple timeline; graduated high school, Culinary Management and then Sustainable Agriculture, it always seems there is more to my story than that.

At a young age I was involved in the farm and kitchen. I remember my Grandpa explaining to me, while we planted broad beans, what a seed needs to grow: water, soil, warmth and air. I remember my dad talking about how to act around the cows, calm and kind. I remember my Grama constantly asking us if we had eaten, and then insisting that she makes us a bowl of soup. I remember my mom getting me to peel carrots while I chatted about a bad day at school. It seemed when I was deciding what career path to take after high school, it was a no brainer to go into Culinary school. All of my childhood memories revolved around food of some variety. I soon realized too that food, can instill such strong emotions in people. Think of a meal or smell so powerful it can bring you back in time. If anyone has ever had my Grama's peameal they will understand the pure bliss that I am talking about.

Over the past five years my business has grown and expanded quicker than I could ever imagine. After talking with various customers about our products and experiences on the farm I have realized that I am helping people build memories, surrounded by delicious food, just like my childhood. We are not only making apple pies, we are bringing people back to their Grandma's kitchen and the smell of apple pie filling the house. We are not only cooking a five course meal for a group in the Blackhouse, we are feeding them while they laugh and enjoy a meal, creating their own memories. As I mentioned before, we have grown quicker than I could ever expect, and I would like to personally thank all of our customers for allowing us to be a part of your amazing food memories. Here's to more delicious food, laughter and great memories!!

Sincerely,
Rebecca
