THE VOICE OF SCEDA

June/July 2019 Newsletter

Letter From
Andrena Powell-Baker, SCCED
Senior Manager, Community Relations and Development - Lockhart Power Company
SCEDA President (2019-2020)

Dear SCEDA Members,

It is with great honor and eagerness that I serve as your President this year! I am incredibly excited for what lies ahead for our organization and personally thank you, SCEDA members, for the opportunity. Thank you to Mark Warner, Immediate Past President, for his tireless work to propel SCEDA to continued success. In the past year, our industry has come under scrutiny from the media and public. He was quick to answer the call to bring clarity to difficult topics like the critical role incentives play in our state and respective local communities. Mark’s response helped reinforce SCEDA as truly being South Carolina’s “voice of economic development.” Together, the board and I look forward to carrying that thought leadership and momentum forward.

I would be remiss to not also thank each of you for your continued engagement and for being the core of what makes SCEDA such a worthwhile organization. We are nearly 800 members strong from diverse business sectors and from all 46 counties in the state.  Together, we are a formidable force to be reckoned with in the economic development world!

On the membership front, time and time again, we hear from you that SCEDA’s networking opportunities and educational value are second to none. Our Membership Meetings, Midyear Meeting, and Annual Conference committees will continue working for you to ensure that our organization does its part to provide you the foundation and opportunities to be successful.  I’m excited to say that this year, you will be seeing and hearing more from our standing committees: Public Relations, Membership, Sponsorship, Professional Development, The Women’s Group, Young Professionals, Local Developers and Legislative.  During the Board’s Annual Planning Retreat in June, the Committee Chairs led brainstorming sessions to help develop meaningful strategies for the 2019-2020 program of work. You will hear more about this over the coming months.

Most recently, our 54th Annual Conference was held May 1 – 3 at the Myrtle Beach Marriott Resort at Grande Dunes. Over 300 of you attended, making it yet another successful SCEDA event!  The Annual Conference is special for several reasons. First and foremost, we have the opportunity to learn together and collaborate.  The Conference also brings together the most number of members in one place, giving us the opportunity to reconnect with long-time members and welcome new ones.  This year’s conference was designed to motivate and inspire us to return to our respective work places renewed and ready to make a difference across South Carolina. We acknowledged colleagues’ successes and hard work with awards, and advanced several of our members through professional development scholarships.

At the end of 2019, we’ll be closing the chapter on one decade and beginning a new one. Let’s keep our minds and hearts open to new and better ways of doing business within our industry. During SCEDA events, go out of your way to introduce yourself to members that you don’t know.  It could lead to an opportunity for both parties.

Over the next 12 months, let’s challenge one another to find at least one thing that we can personally do in our own community that will add value to quality of life.  By doing so, it will only make us better as a state!  As you see colleagues at different SCEDA functions or around the state, ask the question, “What have you done this year to make your community better?” I certainly plan to challenge myself and ask the question often!

On behalf of the 2019-2020 SCEDA Board of Directors, we look forward to serving you. Thank you in advance for your continued support and participation and please don’t hesitate to give us feedback.

Best Regards,
