Annual Meeting Summary

The GHCA 2022 annual meeting was held on April 5th at the Busch Annapolis Library. Approximately 45 people attended in person and 17 via Zoom. We enjoyed seeing neighbors, discussing goals for the year, electing new and returning board members, and hearing from our elected City Alderwomen.

Our key accomplishments from the past year were sending 9 digital newsletters to 380+ subscribers, engaging the city and state regarding the Poplar Path and West Street Library Crosswalk, improving germantownhomewood.com, and sponsoring 5 community social events.

In 2022, we are looking forward to expanding our advocacy, community improvement, and social efforts with our new and returning board members.

Special thank yous to Antonia Barry for reserving the room and handling logistics for the meeting and to John Woods for setting up and recording the Zoom.

A recording of the meeting can be viewed here. Access Passcode: t7S9$iMe

GREENSCAPE - Join us THIS SATURDAY,
April 23rd!

On Saturday, April 23rd Jim Martin, Keanuú Smith-Brown, and Bob Waldman are heading up projects in Germantown and Homewood for Greenscape! Help us to plan for the day by signing up when and where you'd like to work. We'll have coffee and donuts for you, stuff gets done, and it always turns into a helluva good time!

HOMEWOOD

9:00 am start time at the S.Cherry Grove bridge.  Volunteers will cut back vines and fish old plastic bottles and trash out of the Creek under and around the footbridge. Others will loosen soil and prepare it for planting flowers. Volunteers should bring gloves, old shoes, and coveralls as well as cutting tools like pruners and hedge trimmers. If you have a crab net that would be helpful. Antonia Barry and Jim Martin are project leaders.

10:30 am start time at the Fowlkes’ Community Park at the end of McGuckian adjacent to Ceremony Coffee. Trash will be picked up, flower beds will be cultivated with topsoil/mulch, and additional new flowers/plants will be planted. The Park is dedicated to Lyle and Gilda Fowlkes who live next to the park in honor of their service to the Annapolis Community and to youth programs at the City’s Rec and Parks Department. Please bring any gardening materials you have that may help with the project (i.e. masks, gloves, shovels, rakes). Keannuu Smith-Brown is coordinating.

GERMANTOWN

Meet at Studio 39 circle at 9:30 am. The Germantown projects are primarily in Poplar Park.  Our primary focus will be on Glen Ave and Bulletin Board Plaza, but the more people come, the more projects will appear. Dress appropriately and bring tools appropriate for what you want to do. A weed whacker to trim back liriope would be helpful.

WHAT IS GREENSCAPE?

GreenScape is a City of Annapolis and community partnership investment of beautification, clean-up, and planting in public spaces throughout the City. For three decades, hundreds of projects have been initiated and adopted by individuals, community groups, and neighborhood associations.

JOIN THE WEST STREET CROSSWALK COMMITTEE

Have you noticed your neighbors darting and dashing across West Street like a game of Frogger?

Several months ago the State Highway Administration (SHA) removed the crosswalk at McKendree/Locust and recently at N Cherry Grove/ S Cherry Grove along with the crossing flags. While SHA wants people to cross at the new library crossing, this does not work for many neighbors due to the additional distance and timing of the library light. Board member Conor Miller worked tirelessly to engage SHA last year on the library light timing and met resistance.

GHCA has voted to form a committee to engage our elected state representatives, Sen. Sarah Elfreth, Del. Shaneka Henson, and Del. Dana Jones. If you want to help advocate for improving our community crosswalks, send an email to ghca21401@gmail.com.

Based on the people who have already committed, this will be an active and persistent committee. Conor Miller will be on it as the Board liaison and Jim Martin from S. Cherry Grove has volunteered. Will you join them?

JOIN THE POPLAR TRAIL COMMITTEE

As the city moves through the Concept Design phase of the Poplar Trail work, GHCA would like a representative committee to engage and communicate with the city about progress and design. Keith Cyphers, Jonathan McCopp, Kathleen Doyle, and Bob Waldman have volunteered. We could use at least one more person. If you’d like to join them, let us know at ghca21401@gmail.com

MEETING WITH APD

The Annapolis Police Department will hold a Community Intelligence meeting on Thursday, April 28th at 1:30 pm. They have reserved 5 seats for GHCA volunteers. While we already have 5 volunteers lined up, we can explore additional seats for anyone else interested in attending.  If you would like to attend please email ghca21401@gmail.com.

Woodlawn Tree Cutting

GHCA recently engaged with Brian Adams, Annapolis Urban Forester, about a large tree that was mistakenly cut down on the City-owned conservation easement at Beech and Woodlawn by a nearby property owner. The property owner will be planting two trees on their property and paying a fee-in-lieu equal to three additional trees. The fee-in-lieu, a total of $1,050, will be added to the City's tree planting account for planting on public property. Brian Adams would like to use some or all of this money to plant new trees in the Germantown- Homewood neighborhood. Please let GHCA know if you have any areas in mind.

Reminder to contact the city before you remove any trees to avoid headaches. Tree removal guidelines and permit applications can be found here.
