Project: Pylon Island

Island Clearers Needed

Friday 14 October &
Saturday 15 October

Please help to improve our sailing water around Pylon Island during October, before water levels rise.
This will benefit Sunday racing, the Oppie Group and the School.

Last year with the help of volunteers from all sectors we successfully cut back and cleared three islands.  Routine monthly work parties should be able to keep these clear over winter.

However, this year we urgently need to repeat the all sector project effort during October and denude Pylon Island before the water levels rise. There will be a need for two people with chain saws, two attending and clearing away the cut young trees growing out of the water, two strimming and cutting grass and two to run the bonfire if the weather is right.

We need volunteers from BSTC as well as the sailing and other duty rosters.

If you are available to help please contact the club office as soon as possible.

September was the 2016 Bart's Bash & inaugural Pursuicap race at Burghfield. A great day despite the lack of wind!

Those who took part joined a race across 58 countries & 356 venues with in excess of 7000 competitors.
Congratulations to the Burghfield Oppie Club who are currently topping the Optimist Fleet Leader board!

2016 Bash Board - Burghfield currently 7th Largest Fleet!

The day was all about raising awareness and money for the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation - supporting grass roots sailing and Disabled Sailing. Thank you for the £354.58 raised at the club, plus the other donations by text and online.

The overall Bart's Bash Burghfield trophy winner will be announced as soon as the worldwide results are all uploaded, calculated and published.

2016 RS Aero Open Meeting - 10 Sep

Volunteer Instructor & Assistant Instructor Training Opportunity

Berkshire Sail Training are looking for new volunteers for the coming season. Training sessions run most Saturdays from November to March inclusive.
Sessions are spent working on skills leading to entry level for the Assistant Instructor and the Instructor course depending on age and ability.

BST have been running this programme for over 15 years for those interested in qualifying as an RYA Instructor and helping at the centre. As part of the course you will receive training that will help prepare you for your RYA instructor course and give you relevant experience in water sports.

To apply the programme you need to meet the following criteria;
  • be aged 14 or over
  • hold at the RYA dinghy Stage 4 or equivalent
  • In return we expect you to make yourself available for a minimum of 25 days per year for two years, these days must be when we have courses running.
We are also looking for more mature instructors to help on Saturdays with our adult courses so please do contact us for a chat if you are interested.

What's In It For You?
  • It's a great way to continue to enjoy what sailing has to offer by helping young people take part in the activity whilst building your own self confidence.
  • Qualifying as an RYA Assistant Instructor is a great stepping stone towards your RYA Instructor, or if you become an instructor you will be eligible for full time work at all RYA Training Centres both in the UK and abroad - great way to spend a gap year after gaining experience at the centre.
  • You can use it towards a Duke Of Edinburgh's award.
  • The programme offers the chance to experience what it's like to be an instructor in water sports, so you will be informed whether to pursue this in the future.
  • The scheme requires you to show dedication to others and promotes life skills and many other qualities that are extremely attractive to employers.
  • In return for completing the programme you will be offered, at the discretion of BSTC
    • a free RYA Assistant Instructor course and the opportunity to progress onto an instructors course with heavily reduced fees
    • or, if training towards the Instructor award, heavily reduced fees on a powerboat course, a 1st aid course and an Instructor course.
  • Continued training whilst helping at the Centre with regular reviews and guidance from experienced staff.
  • Opportunities to try/learn other activities.
  • Expenses offered for each day worked up to £28 for instructors.
  • A staff polo shirt
  • Use of all the centre’s equipment free of charge subject to availability.
  • Social events and opportunities to make new friends.
  • And last but not least lots of fun afloat.
We will be running informal interviews on the morning of the 1st October, where we will give an overview of what the charity offers and what help we need to keep it all going.

If you are interested in joining our team, even after the 1st October interview deadline, please email Jean or Jonny or telephone 01189 303467

If you have any news from recent sailing events or activities, feedback or suggestions, please email Sharon or Virginia
