Burghfield Breeze 2016: Issue 12 - The Bumper Summer Edition!

News, reviews and information from Burghfield Sailing Club.

Commodore's Corner

Our committee has been working hard on our behalf, with well supported meetings and constructive debate on key issues.  Much of our effort has been put into lease and planning arrangements, which we have been keeping the members aware of with information that we are able to share.  We now await the response of West Berks to the Berfeld Application.

After a year on the committee, Ian Bergh has stepped down from the post of Treasurer.  On behalf of the committee I would like to thank Ian for his contribution to the club. As to his replacement, we are hoping to announce a new appointment next month. In the meantime and picking up on his past service, Jason Pyke kindly filed our annual company accounts for us.

As you are aware we have a vacancy for RC General Purposes to lead the work of others.  This role has been filled by a number of us stepping up as and when necessary and the now regular monthly work parties led by Chris Ward and Charles Gilchrist are beginning to make a difference. If anyone is interested in coming forward and filling this role would they please let me know.

We are very proud of our club and we would like to give the boat park a major tidy up. To help the soft landscape working parties it would be really helpful if you could spend a moment tidying your boat parking spaces, removing debris, and a give it bit of gardening over the next four weeks.  If needed there is a pair of shears in the Club office and I have found weed killer to be very useful - it also keeps the rabbits away.  To reduce maintenance some members have put down tarpaulin or a weed barrier.  Your assistance is appreciated.

We had another great Open Day in spite of a forecast which was unfavourable. As this begins to fade in the memory we had the very successful Oppie Camp last weekend, ably led by Paul Checksfield and his army of supporters.

I must thank you all for your patience during the Traveller invasion and we all like to thank Andrew Leigh for his prompt excellent work on making and fitting the upper gates.  Our club area is clearly an attraction to many people some of whom we would rather not have!
Finally I hope all of you have a great sailing summer now that the sunshine has finally arrived!
Wynn Kenrick, Commodore

BSC Survey Feedback

Thank you to those who completed the survey. The feedback is very useful in helping us as a club understand from the membership what is important and how you are feeling about the club.
We had 142 respondents which represents about 25-30% of the membership. I am pleased the 83% of you feel the club is excellent value for money, 92% felt the club met the members needs and over 55% of respondents rated the club over 80%. The overall rating for the club is 75% which is good and gives plenty of scope for improvement!
Generally there is high levels of satisfaction across most areas which is encouraging. From the survey we have identified some key areas to focus on:
  • The club needs to develop a strong Youth section. Satisfaction within the Oppy Club is high but we need to replicate this and support more youth classes and a wider age range.
  • Need to work closer with BSTC as this does impact our ability to attract non sailors into the sport.
  • Desire for more social but as per the EU debate there is a split of opinion!
  • Communication is very good but you want more communication from the main committee.
  • 51% of you would like us to look at how we can improve your skills. This is specifically within the beginners to competent sailor group.
  • Boat park needs sorting out!
In addition, we have received lots of great comments from you which the committee is reviewing over the next couple of months with the objective of incorporating them into a development plan. However, that does not mean nothing will happen in the mean time so, where there is quick and easy solution the committee will look implement some of the ideas. One of these is to put a webcam up with a view of the lake but, for those of you who would like the lake to be deeper this is unlikely the happen.
Thank you once again to all those who responded and I hope you will see that we have taken your comments and feedback seriously by the actions the committee will be taking over the coming months.
Nigel Rolfe
