May at the resource exchange!
We have quite an exciting month coming at The Resource Exchange. This Friday we'll be hosting our very 1st First Friday event in our reCreate Gallery. Then on May 13th we'll be at The Philadelphia Art Museum for The Arts and Business Council Award Ceremony receiving our Business and Arts Partnership Award with Revolution Recovery. And don't miss our May reCreate workshop on Sunday May 25th hosted by local artist Maddie Hewitt!

We are proud to announce that The Resource Exchange is receiving an Arts & Business Council Award for the relationship we've cultivated with our recycling partner Revolution Recovery. Since 2010, our unique creative reuse/recycling partnership with Revolution Recovery has kept over 2 million pounds of valuable material out of Philadelphia's landfills. In 2013 alone, over 28 tons of film and theatre props and set pieces, art supplies, textiles, lumber, and many other reusable materials were put back into the creative economy, and over 96 tons of set construction materials were recycled.

The 29th Annual Arts & Business Council Awards Celebration will take place from 6-9pm at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Please join The Resource Exchange and Revolution Recovery, as well as the other honorees for a night of arts, culture and fun. You can get tickets to the celebration and read more about our award and other winners here!

Friday, May 2nd 5-8

Put us on your first friday list of galleries! Now that we're just a short walk away from Frankford Avenue, Girard Avenue, Crane Arts, and so many other art studios, galleries, and creative businesses in Kensington/Fishtown, you can add us to your list of first friday galleries featuring local artists.  Visit us this Friday May 2nd from 5-8 for our extended shopping hours, gallery viewing, and refreshments. This month we will be featuring reCreate artist Maddie Hewitt's work.

reCreate

The Resource Exchange is dedicated to enabling and promoting creative reuse in local art, craft, and design. Have you reCreated with materials from RE? Send us photos with a brief description of your work -- we'll feature new works in each newsletter, online, and in our store.

reCreate featured artist: Maddie Hewitt
Maddie Hewitt earned a BFA in Sculpture from Tyler School of Art. She is interested in themes surrounding cultural history, crowd behavior, and the impact humans have on the physical world. While not tied to a particular medium, Hewitt’s recent work explores these ideas primarily through collage and photography. She collects low budget and recycled images available in the public sphere that represent a mutual aspiration, disposition and political agenda; some  of these images retain their original context and some are paired with original photographs.

As  a curatorial member at Little Berlin she seeks to organize exhibitions and  film screenings that examine our past and present to foster new opinions that people can invest
in for the future. Hewitt has received the Edith Weil Hecht Memorial Award as well as the Harry and Esther Rosen Honorarium. She lives and works in Philadelphia, and also enjoys volunteering at The Resource Exchange. See more of her work on her website.
