Summer is right around the corner...
...and The Resource Exchange is the place to be! Stop into the store during the month of June and check out our recently saved materials that are just waiting to be reused in your summer project. This month at the re, get inspired by Emily Hirshorn's scrap quilts in the reCreate Featured Artist Gallery, add the re to your list of stops on First Friday the 6th, and learn about the possibilities of laser cutting on our salvaged supplies on the 22nd with Rebecca Barker of Pa-py-ri!
$1/lb fabrics every day!

The Resource Exchange always has tons of fabrics saved from  Philly's creative industries, but did you know that we sell a whole lot of it for just $1 per pound? That's right! Our 'heavy' moving sale price of $1 per pound fabric was such a hit that we kept the low pricing here at our new location. You can find the per pound bins in our fabric section. Make clothes, blankets, art name it! Just grab a whole bunch of pieces, weigh it, and make something great!

Friday, June 6th

Join us at the re this Friday for extended shopping hours, gallery viewing, and refreshments! Now that we're just a short walk away from Frankford Avenue, Girard Avenue, Crane Arts, and so many other art studios, galleries, and creative businesses in Kensington/Fishtown, you can add us to your list of first friday galleries featuring local artists. This month in the gallery we will be showing quilts handmade from scrap fabric pieces by reCreate Featured Artist Emily Hirshorn.

The Resource Exchange is dedicated to enabling and promoting creative reuse in local art, craft, and design. Have you reCreated with materials from the re? Send us photos with a brief description of your work -- we'll feature new works in each newsletter, online, and in our store.

Fabric is an integral part of our lives and we can become quite attached to patterns, materials, and the memories we associate with them.

like to use fabrics that have already lived one life.  Perhaps as childhood sheets or a mother's blouse. Or maybe as a holiday table cloth or apron. These fabrics have stories to tell and I hate to see those stories thrown away.

The stories of these fabrics are given "new life" in these quilts that are made for a new human life. The variety of textures, colors, and patterns provide many opportunities for a growing baby to make observations and connections.

My quilts are not perfect - the lines aren't straight and the quilting is bumpy in places. No one will mistake them for store-bought. This aesthetic is intentional. I believe that they more effectively transfer the love that went into creating them because it is clear that they were made by a living, breathing person. Life is not perfect, people are not perfect, and I think it is important for children to realize this and embrace the messiness and beauty of it all.
