Starting Strong

It's been just over a month since 2013 began, and The Resource Exchange has already saved over 6,500 pounds of material from landfill. So far this year we've reclaimed material from a film, a theater, a design firm, a television commercial, and many individuals -- and that's not counting the three donations we'll receive this week! As we like to say in the shop, you never know what you might find.

Art-from-the-Arts Design Challenge

The Resource Exchange is
currently seeking work
for our ongoing
Design Challenge
which promotes local
artists who transform
materials we've gleaned
 from Philadelphia's

creative industries
into new works.

Featured artists will have their work displayed on our gallery wall, as well as in our newsletter and social media sites. Selected works will also have the opportunity to be exhibited in future group shows in the works for 2013.
We welcome submissions from artists, designers, and makers in all media and styles. To submit your work for consideration for upcoming opportunities, please submit a minimum of 2 quality jpeg images representing your work (including titles / dimensions / media), a brief artist biography, and any relevant online links to your work.  No application deadline or fees, just put “Art-from-the-Arts” in the subject line, and email your entry to

The Resource Exchange is dedicated to enabling and promoting creative reuse in local art, craft, and design. Have you reCreated with materials from RE? Send us photos with a brief description of your work -- we'll feature new works in each newsletter, online, and in our store.

reCreate featured artist: Eileen Lillian Doyle
Eileen Lillian Doyle is a multi-media artist, curatorial member of the gallery collective Little Berlin, and Resource Exchange employee. Eileen works with fabric, installations, sculpture, and performance art, investigating contemporary systems and symbols that bring meaning to human life. She created Garbage World -- a performance series in development in Chicago and Philadelphia since 2009 -- to see artists perform in a situation with more allowances than limitations. Messes, grotesqueness, cleanliness, and joy happen in life; therefore, they are not excluded from this event.

In addition to featuring Eileen's work [above, in progress], which incorporates reclaimed burlap from The Resource Exchange and Green Street Coffee Roasters, this year's Garbage World includes work by visiting Chicago artists Jose Hernandez and Sofia Moreno. Visit Garbage World this Saturday, February 9th at Vox Populi's AUX space.
