September at the

Stop into The Resource Exchange this month for vintage finds from a movie set, First Friday, and a pattern making workshop with our reCreate Featured Artist of September, Heidi Barr!

A major motion picture was just filmed in the Philadelphia area, and when they were done they sure had a lot of reusable stuff leftover. Luckily the re team was able to save a whole bunch for reuse, not landfill! Now in the store we have furniture pieces, lamps, dishes, pillows, artwork, curtains, props and more totally reusable (many like new!) items that were used to decorate the set of the film...and all at our low-cost prices!

reCreate Featured Artist
Heidi Barr
Heidi Barr is a Philadelphia based artist working in costume design and mixed media community based installation art. She holds a BFA in dance from Cornish College of the Arts and is a 2004 Leeway foundation Window of Opportunity grant recipient. A former professional dancer turned successful costume designer, she has created costumes for countless choreographic works by many notable choreographers. Equaling her lifelong commitment to dance and the costumes it inspires, is Heidi’s passion for gardening and her attention to environmental issues. This has inspired her current work with site specific, outdoor sculpture created with communities, celebrating urban gardening. Heidi is partnering with The East Park Revitalization Alliance (EPRA) to create an installation with residents of the surrounding neighborhood for EPRAs' Apple festival at Woodford Mansion this coming October.
Heidi also creates 'the kitchen garden series'. A line of kitchen textiles made from reclaimed materials and sold to support urban gardens. The reMade towels are available for sale at The Resource Exchange! Learn more about the project on the website.

Pattern Making Basics
Workshop with Costume Designer and reCreate Featured Artist Heidi Barr

Sunday, September 28th

Have a simple favorite garment you'd like to replicate?
Heidi can show you how without destroying the original!

Workshop participants will make a pattern using an original favorite article of clothing as a guide; then Heidi will instruct you how to cut and sew a duplicate with reclaimed fabrics from The Resource Exchange.

What You Need to Know:

  • Bring your sewing machine, the manual if you have it, elastic or velcro if needed and your garment to duplicate.
  • This is a FREE workshop, but you can purchase fabric for your garment from our wide selection of reclaimed and salvaged textiles
  • The key to success is to keep it simple! No fly closures, no buttons, no collars. Above are a few examples of clothes we  will have time to replicate.
  • If you just want to get to know your machine and do a great sewing project, come make a lunch or tote bag like these...
Space is Limited for this event so please, RSVP on Facebook
