November reCREATE Workshop
Sunday, November 10th, 1pm-4pm

This Sunday, Ready to Hand: SAORI Philadelphia is teaming up with The Resource Exchange for a Weaving Sampler Day.  The Resource Exchange saves literally tons of fabric from landfill, so we're really excited about our new partnership with RTH that will explore creative reuse of textile remnants. Textile expert Leslie Sudock, of RTH, will demonstrate for participants both traditional and non-traditional techniques, how to warp a frame, and other on and off loom weaving methods that incorporate textile remnants.  Plus, Leslie is offering a discount on future classes at RTH for attendees of the workshop!
RSVP and invite your friends:

Ready to Hand: SAORI Philadelphia is is a community textile gallery and teaching studio.  They are an official SAORI weaving studio and dealer of SAORI looms and accessories.  Ready to Hand offers instruction for adults and children in SAORI weaving, traditional weaving and "off-loom" weaving.

The Resource Exchange is dedicated to enabling and promoting creative reuse in local art, craft, and design. Have you reCreated with materials from RE? Send us photos with a brief description of your work -- we'll feature new works in each newsletter, online, and in our store.
reCreate featured artist: Emily Manalo Ruiz

Emily Manalo Ruiz is a California native living and working in Philadelphia, PA. Her work evokes a sense of catharsis through reinterpretation of the past. Using salvaged textiles, Ruiz stitches past experiences into reverent stories with a sense of nostalgia, longing and, sometimes, hope. Through the interplay of intimate and collective associations, Ruiz creates a romantic historical landscape at once intensely personal and universal. Commissioned by Urban Outfitters and inspired by the colors and landscape of Malibu, Emily's largest work to date is made from scrap fabrics from The Resource Exchange. It is currently hanging in Urban's new store in Malibu.  You can see Emily's newest scrap material work hanging in the resource Exchange Gallery for the month of November.
Emily Manalo Ruiz has shown at URBN's Gallery at 543, Breeze Block Gallery, Momenta Art, Family Business, Philadelphia City Hall, The University of Newcastle, The University of South Carolina, The International School of Painting, Drawing & Sculpture & Benedict College. Ruiz received her Certificate (Fashion Studies) in 2011 from Moore College of Art & Design and her BFA (Painting and Art History) in 2002 from The University of South Carolina.  View more of Emily's work on her website.
