Principal's Message

The calendar turned to December and it is starting to feel a bit more like the holidays with the snow cover outside. We have two weeks of classes remaining until the break and are looking forward to finishing the first stretch of the school year strong.

In chatting with students over the past week, it is obvious they are enjoying some of the more normal rhythms we are having at school. Never was this more obvious then the theatre students preparing to perform A Winter's Tale this weekend. I am going to watch on Friday night and am excited to see our talented performers on stage. We are grateful to have a state of the art theatre to practice and perform in and a wonderful lead teacher in Mr. Goodyear to steer the ship. Good luck kids.

Our students were informed last week that if you were in gr. 10/11, there will be no cumulative, high stakes final exams this semester. While this may come as a relief to some, it does shift the weighting of the course more into what students are currently working through. We are working with our students and teachers to ensure they don't wait until the end to get caught up. Students are encouraged to get their current work caught up, attend Flex in courses they need extra help, and work collaboratively with their teachers to have a successful semester.

Work continues on our portables with the utilities getting connected. We are anticipating the final two to be delivered mid December. Our hope is we will be in for the start of semester 2.

Have a great weekend.

Our theatre students were thrilled to get back on the stage this fall with their production, A Winter's Gift. Thank you to all the students and Mr. Goodyear for your commitment to making a top notch play! We look forward to Mamma Mia in the spring!
The first entry in our staff/student sporting series occurred this week with a hard fought volleyball game. The staff came out on top, in part due to some dubious reffing by Mrs. Marter!

As winter break approaches and travel plans are being made, we wanted to ensure families are aware of current federal requirements for travel. For families considering travelling outside of Canada, please be aware that under federal travel requirements unvaccinated children under 12 (including those who have had their first of two vaccine doses) are not to return to school for 14 days once they return to Canada. Please see the full requirements outlined by the Government of Canada
Semester 1 Final Exam Schedule

As many families are aware, Provincial Achievement Tests (gr. 9) and Diploma Exams (gr. 12) will be proceeding this year. In October, Alberta Education Minister Adriana LaGrange announced a reduction in the weighting of Diploma Exams to 10% from 30% to reduce the stress felt by gr. 12 students as they approached the exams.

Given the guidelines presented by RVS, BCHS will not be offering cumulative, final exams for students in gr. 10/11 in January. Similar to last year, students will have the ability to be re-assessed in a small number of critical evaluations that could improve their grade in the final week of classes for semester 1.

Teachers will work together in their departments to ensure consistency across their courses for the type of re-assessment offered to students. Our goal, as with all assessment practices, is to communicate a reliable and valid grade to students at the conclusion of the semester. Staff will be meeting this coming week to discuss more details of what our exam period will look like but we wanted to communicate this to parents as soon as we could confirm it.
