Principal's Message

Good Morning Everyone,

I hope you had a great week and are looking forward to the weekend ahead. We are in the heart of the first semester, and BCHS is busy. Read about a few of the highlights below.

1. ELAA - Wednesday, Nov 30th!

Your Connection to Post-Secondary Opportunities - Educational Liaison Association of Alberta

BCHS will host a post-secondary fair on November 30, 2022, from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm. It is a fantastic opportunity to ask questions to 28 Alberta post-secondary institutions, including Colleges, Universities, Technical Institutions, the RCMP, and the Canadian Forces.

During this fair, you can inquire about programs, admission requirements, scholarships, housing, and more! Nowhere else do you get all these institutions in one place, so be sure to take full advantage of this opportunity to plan for your future.

Come join us in the Learning Commons next Wednesday and find out more about your future!

2. Graduation Banquet Fundraiser!

Fundraising efforts have already started to help offset the costs of our parent-run graduation banquet on Friday, May 26th.

Saturday, December 3rd, drop off your bottles in the parking lot West of BCHS from 10 - 12 PM!

Bottles can be collected and dropped off at the Hometown Bottle depot at any time under Bert Church Grad 2023. If you cannot participate in the bottle drive on December 3rd and take bottles to hometown bottle depot, please add your name to the back of the receipt, snap a photo of the front & back and send it to to be entered into the student participation draw.

3. The Cobble Classic

The student team is ready to take down the teachers in the annual student/staff hockey game. Through donations and ticket sales, the Alberta Children's Hospital Foundation will receive over $5000. Well done Chargers. The game is sold out and for any student not in attendance, alternative activities are planned at the school. We look forward to a fun day at BCHS today!

4. Gr. 9 Study Skills Session

We were thrilled to see over 100 gr. 9 students attend our first Study Skills session on Thursday in the learning commons. The four-week workshop will review key tips and strategies to be ready to learn and implement that learning in test situations. The first session was titled "Get Organized," and I led it.

How Habits Work - Charles Duhigg
To begin the session, all participants turned off their phones. Distraction leads to the 'perception of multitasking,' which research shows we do poorly. Students having a plan to limit distractions with their devices is a great first step to being physically and mentally present for learning. We also discussed how to build positive habits by watching this short video on the habit loop. I encourage everyone to click this link as the 3 minutes might change a 'pesky habit' in your life this week.

Lastly, we completed an activity focused on planning ahead. Many of the tips we discussed were planned for the day/week ahead. Students had a calendar activity where they mapped out the next two weeks of their school days (Nov 28th - Dec 9th - yes, Dec 9th is only two weeks away!) and worked together to ensure they know when major assessments/assignments are landing in their calendar.

While we are unsure whether all the students came for the free pizza or the study tips, it was great to see many students investing in their learning by discovering new ways to approach it.

To access all the resources shared with the group, please use this QR code, which will take you to our Google Classroom. As we move along, this classroom will be the home for study resources for our students.

5. Families in need - BCHS

As we head into the holiday season, it is a great opportunity to reflect on ways to be generous to those in need. Next Thursday, we'll be starting our annual Food Bank drive. Families who would like to donate money to support students at BCHS with unpaid field trip fees and other potential needs can do so through the RVS giving site.

Give to BCHS

Have a great weekend!

Congratulations to our volleyball teams on a successful zone tournament in Okotoks.

Jr. Girls - Silver
Jr. Boys - 4th
Sr. Girls - Bronze
Sr. Boys - Silver

In chatting with the coaches, it was evident the kids played some of their best volleyball at the right time! Well done to everyone involved.
It was great to see many kids in the Learning Commons cheering Canada on in their match against Belgium. We will continue to offer World Cup viewing at lunch in the Learning Commons next week.
Students in Sports Medicine 10 got hands-on with CPR and wrapping training this week. Our robust offering of Sports Med is led by Mr. Kirk, who does a terrific job preparing kids for real-life situations.
Dual Credit Signup - Semester 2!

Do you have kids leaving for college or university soon? | Alberta Blue Cross

Olds College and SAIT offer dual credit opportunities in various programs next semester.  Some require travelling to campus, but others are offered completely online.

If you are interested in knowing more, please contact your school counsellor.

Highlighting PSYC 203 – Dual Credit Psychology

This course was developed seven years ago in partnership with the psychology department at the University of Calgary. High school students can experience a first-year university course, with scaffolded support from the high school teacher and earning five high school credits. In this case, students from RVS register for this class offered in Semester 2 (2023) as an after-school hours course. *NOTE: The U of C tuition portion for this course will be FULLY covered by Rocky View Schools. Therefore, there is no tuition cost to the student.

The course will take place on Wednesday evenings from 5 –7:30 pm alternating between on-campus and Zoom classes. Students (Gr 11-12) are eligible to register for this course if they have completed one high school psychology course (Gen Psych 20 or Personal Psych 20) before beginning the Dual Credit course in February 2023.

If you are interested in this opportunity, please contact your school counsellor, who can provide more information and help you with the signup.

The Airdrie Public Library is pleased to offer teen-centric programming. Please see the images below!
