In case you missed it: The National Coalition for the Homeless is spearheading the launch of Bring America Home Now: A Comprehensive Grassroots Campaign to End Homelessness in the U.S. Led by people who have themselves experienced homelessness, we will focus on the passage of federal legislation aimed at addressing the interconnected solutions to the decades-long epidemic of homelessness in the United States.

Award winning local journalist, Nick Swartsell provides insight into what's happening at Court View Apartments, and how the infusion of investment capital is impacting us in Cincinnati:

"...In a June 4 interview on YouTube, Vision and Beyond Co-founder Stas Grinberg describes why the company chose Cincinnati. He cites relatively low property values, the city's increasing growth and, as he says, it's "an eviction friendly place."

"Not that eviction is necessarily positive," Grinberg says in the interview, "but from an investor perspective, to be able to force ownership on your property is important. In those aspects, it's absolutely phenomenal."

This investment model is becoming more common nationally, in the Midwest and in the local housing market, says managing attorney at Legal Aid of Greater Cincinnati Nick DiNardo. That nonprofit often aids renters who could face eviction or other housing issues.

Investment groups like Vision and Beyond buy everything from single-family homes to large apartment complexes, DiNardo says.

"We're seeing a lot of kind of, private equity investors, some more formalized than others," DiNardo says. "It's all different areas of the rental market, but I definitely think it's a trend we're seeing."

Listen to Nick DiNardo and Mark Lawson talk about the extension of the CDC eviction moratorium with Cincinnati Edition host Michael Monks at

"A local nonprofit’s summer camp focuses on breaking the cycle of poverty. Its campers are kids who have experienced homelessness.

Last summer, all activities were virtual. This year, kids are back on a hybrid schedule.

It's teachers like Simone Epperson who are the fabric of UpSpring 360's summer camp. She relates to her students because her own family dealt with homelessness.

“A lot of the kids do need this. When I was growing up, we didn’t have things like this. We didn’t have a place that we could come to and spend the summers,” Epperson said."

Sr. Alice Gerdeman, former IJPC Coordinator, worked with unaccompanied minors at the border in San Antonio this Spring to help them feel safe and welcome.

"Recalling a situation at the border in 2019 she says, "I was remembering a woman that I met from El Salvador and she had her son there. They had just been refused entrance into the country and she said, 'I'm going to keep coming. At least he's going to get through, you know. We both saw my other son murdered in front of our house. I will not have a second child murdered. I'll do whatever I need to do. '"

Gerdeman says she understands people should come here legally but "when you're desperate, you're desperate."

She worked with thousands of unaccompanied minors at the border in San Antonio this spring making sure the kids had things to do like playing games or making crafts.

Both nuns have worked with immigrants locally. Kramer was surprised to realize her biggest takeaway from the trip to the border was that it was a privilege to be there.

"I wasn't expecting that I would feel that way and I also was very aware of receiving a lot from them - their honesty, their simplicity and their gratitude and excitement mixed with fear.""

19-year-old Venus traveled from Phoenix, AZ to Lighthouse to find a place to call home. Thank you Kyle Inskeep for highlighting the need to support LGBTQ youth to #endyouthhomelessness.

"The University of Chicago reported that LGBTQ+ youth make up as much as 40% of the homeless youth population.

In late January, Venus Hernandez boarded a plane, snapped a selfie, and left everything she knew and once loved behind in Phoenix, Arizona.

"I realized that I couldn’t live with these people if they couldn’t accept me," she said."

Less than 50% of Hamilton County is fully vaccinated. Protect yourself, protect others who can't get the COVID vaccine, and help us stop the spread of COVID-19.
Myth: I don’t need the COVID-19 vaccine. Enough of the population already has it.
Fact: The risk of going unvaccinated impacts not only those who choose not to be vaccinated, but also those around them. Lower vaccination rates put you and others at risk. It is important that we get as many individuals as possible vaccinated against the virus.

Haile, Jr. Foundation, U.S. Bank Foundation , United Way of Greater Cincinnati and Congregation of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, our nonprofit, Power Inspires Progress creates economic opportunities for those with chronic barriers to employment through a process of individualized stabilization, structured pre-employment training, and ultimately job placement within the community. The restaurant, Venice on Vine, and associated commercial catering kitchen serve as non-traditional classrooms which allow individuals to master “the culture of the workplace”.

Getting out to get it on? Remember to practice safe sex as the holiday weekend approaches! As we begin to emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic, public health officials are expecting a rise in STI cases as people are reconnecting this summer from being quarantined. Play it safe with FREE #condoms from Caracole—available Monday–Friday from 9:00 AM–5PM. Stop on by!

"STDs have been skyrocketing for years. More than 2.5 million infections were reported in 2019, according to the latest data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released in May. Cases of chlamydia have increased by 19 percent since 2015. Gonorrhea was up 56 percent in the same time period. Even more alarming, syphilis jumped 74 percent.

“It was the sixth consecutive year of the highest STI numbers in American history,” Harvey said. “Those numbers were only made worse by the pandemic,” as clinics shuttered and the number of people getting tested tanked.

Even when clinics reopened, many people were still reluctant to come in out of fear of the coronavirus, said Dr. Meera Shah, chief medical officer of Planned Parenthood’s Hudson Peconic New York region.

“I had people telling me I would have come in sooner, but I was afraid of Covid,” she said. “This fear did cause folks to delay care and not receive care.”

A study published in May found that screening for STDs in the U.S. dropped by 40 percent from the start of the pandemic in late February 2020 to April 2020. Testing rebounded in June 2020, but by then, positivity rates for chlamydia and gonorrhea had both increased from the year before."
