This Week @ The Homeless Coalition

Greater Cincinnati Homeless Coalition

In case you missed it: The National Coalition for the Homeless is spearheading the launch of Bring America Home Now: A Comprehensive Grassroots Campaign to End Homelessness in the U.S. Led by people who have themselves experienced homelessness, we will focus on the passage of federal legislation aimed at addressing the interconnected solutions to the decades-long epidemic of homelessness in the United States.

Award winning local journalist, Nick Swartsell provides insight into what's happening at Court View Apartments, and how the infusion of investment capital is impacting us in Cincinnati:

"...In a June 4 interview on YouTube, Vision and Beyond Co-founder Stas Grinberg describes why the company chose Cincinnati. He cites relatively low property values, the city's increasing growth and, as he says, it's "an eviction friendly place."

"Not that eviction is necessarily positive," Grinberg says in the interview, "but from an investor perspective, to be able to force ownership on your property is important. In those aspects, it's absolutely phenomenal."

This investment model is becoming more common nationally, in the Midwest and in the local housing market, says managing attorney at Legal Aid of Greater Cincinnati Nick DiNardo. That nonprofit often aids renters who could face eviction or other housing issues.

Investment groups like Vision and Beyond buy everything from single-family homes to large apartment complexes, DiNardo says.

"We're seeing a lot of kind of, private equity investors, some more formalized than others," DiNardo says. "It's all different areas of the rental market, but I definitely think it's a trend we're seeing."

OTRCH staff had a rare chance to pause and admire our own work today as we dedicated the back patio of our renovated service center to staff. Thank you team for your handwork and dedication every day. And thank you for your donations to make our fabulous patio possible!
“The increase in evictions in our community is unnecessarily hurting low-income renters,” stated Nick DiNardo, managing attorney at Legal Aid Society of Southwest Ohio. “The high demand for rental assistance funds available from American Rescue Plan has presented a challenge to Legal Aid and our community partner to get applications processed. We hope local landlords will understand that they will made whole and give tenants time to get their applications approved.”

"Rodney Walker was 22 and facing homelessness for the second time in his young life.

He couldn’t stay with his mom in her small apartment any longer, but he didn’t have enough money to get a place of his own. He made some calls and moved to City Gospel Mission’s homeless shelter 10 days before Christmas in 2019.

“That’s the lowest I’ve ever been,” said Walker, who is now 23. “I thought about it for a second, and I said, you know, I’m very independent. And I am independently bringing myself to a homeless shelter so I feel like I could get a lot of help.”

That is exactly what happened."

THEY'RE BACK!!! Waiting one year between summer camps was always hard enough, but this time we had to wait two whole years to see our campers, and we are thrilled to be with them again! Camp is entirely outdoors and masked, but they are just as excited as ever to be writing, gardening, and expressing their unique perspectives 😍🌻❤️
Knowing that your furniture donations may help children aging out of foster care, homeless families, or veterans, can bring a sense of joy and peace when it's time to part with belongings that are no longer needed. Check out this video to see how the Wuenker family dealt with the difficult task of downsizing after 50 years in their wonderful family home, and how their decision to donate their furniture turned into a blessing for others in need. #Cincyfurniturebank

Two things you can do to support LGBTQ youth:
Let young people know they can be authentic around you. Demonstrate kindness and inclusion. Allies play a big role in helping LGBTQ youth feel safe.

PANTRY HOURS
Monday 5:00-7:00pm
Tuesday and Thursday 10am - 1pm

Stop by if you are in need or come pick up for a neighbor.

4230 Hamilton Ave. Cincinnati, OH 45223
Less than 50% of Hamilton County is fully vaccinated. Protect yourself, protect others who can't get the COVID vaccine, and help us stop the spread of COVID-19.

Myth: I don’t need the COVID-19 vaccine. Enough of the population already has it.

Fact: The risk of going unvaccinated impacts not only those who choose not to be vaccinated, but also those around them. Lower vaccination rates put you and others at risk. It is important that we get as many individuals as possible vaccinated against the virus.

What is the school-to-prison pipeline?
It is a harsh system in which (mostly Black and Brown) children are funneled out of public schools and into juvenile and criminal justice systems, often for things that would otherwise be seen as harmless.
It is our duty as allies, parents, and friends to dismantle this harsh educational reality for so many children.
To learn more about this issue and learn how to help end yet another form of systemic racism, visit our website at: https://www.ywcacincinnati.org/.../beyond-juneteenth.../
