Operations Manager | Avison Young

How did you first get involved in Commercial Real Estate?
After 18+ years at Alberta Health Services, I knew that I needed a change as I wanted to be doing something at the end of my career that I found both challenging and fulfilling.  I came across an ad for my current position in a commercial real estate firm and knew that I needed to at least get an interview.  Six years later I can happily say that I have no regrets – best decision I have ever made!

What would you say is the most adventurous thing you’ve done in your life?
Resigned from AHS to move into the private sector!  Making the move was a definite risk as I was walking away from not only the security/seniority I had achieved, but also from my pension.
My career with Avison Young has been the most rewarding in my 35+ years of working full time.  At AY you are offered an opportunity to be your best and are given the tools and encouragement to be successful regardless of your role.

Where would you love to travel to?
My favorite form of travel is to cruise.  I will be taking my 14th cruise this October and plan to travel to Europe next year.  One cruise I have always had interest in but have yet to take is Canada/New England – hopefully within the next few years I will have the opportunity.
I would also like to make another trip back home to Northern Ireland.  The scenery is amazing and the people are lovely.

What are your hobbies?
I didn’t actually have any until I signed up for a pottery class a couple of months ago.  I am now officially hooked on unleashing my creative side and have since taken an artisan bread making class, French macaroon  class, Duchess bakery class and signed up for another 8 week pottery class.  I plan on taking stained glass and silver smithing as well in the fall.  I highly recommend that anyone who may be interested in trying their hand at something new, check out the classes through the City of Edmonton.

Goal for Gold! CREW Foundation

CREW Network Foundation is the only foundation dedicating its resources solely towards advancing women in the commercial real estate industry. And, in 2016, CREW Network established the Canadian arm of CREW Network Foundation. All money donated stays in Canada and will be used towards scholarships for young Canadian women pursing post-secondary studies in a real estate related field.

Edmonton CREW is proud to have already raised over $1400 this year for CREW Foundation and have achieved 22% member participation. CREW has challenged all chapters to strive for a "Gold Standard" in our support of CREW Foundation. In order to achieve this goal we require 50% member participation, 100% board participation and a chapter donation. In order to support this important initiative we ask you to click below to donate. Any donation amount is encouraged, and those over $20 will receive a tax receipt.

If you are interested in collecting donations at your office this summer please let us know, we would be happy to offer any help we can.

President's Message

Welcome to summer!  Also known as “construction season”; a season that is vital for so many of our members and sponsors.

Edmonton CREW has been very busy with building our chapter and our presence in order to add profile and value for you - our amazing members.  Thank you to our membership committee
and all of our advocates, we are now a membership of 101. I continue to hear buzz in our real estate community of the memories and impact of our Breaking Ground Gala.  We can’t ever forget all the work of the team that delivered such an exceptional experience. Imagine what they can deliver in their respective spheres of influence in our commercial real estate industry. Reach out and give them a try!

We’ve been top of mind and front of room at the Edmonton Real Estate Forum, the Buildex conference, and other events, and we will continue to seek opportunities to showcase our membership and Edmonton CREW. If one comes your way and we may be able to help – just call!

Summer passes very quickly and fall calendars are fast to fill.  You can assure yourself not to miss any of our remaining Chapter networking and education events by taking a moment now to save the dates as posted on our website’s EVENTS  tab.  I hope to see you at them making new business relationships and strengthening others.

We’re here to advance and celebrate you in your pursuit of professional success. Please reach out and get in touch if there are connections we can help you with or queries we can tackle. It’s also the time of year that the Nominating Committee starts to solicit members for open Board positions. If precious friendships and leadership skills interest you, please consider Board involvement and contact myself or any current board member.

Thank you to each of you for your contributions over the past six months – attending, planning, supporting and pitching in! Summer is a time to recharge and refresh.

My best wishes for a happy and safe summer. See you all in September.

2017 CREW Network Leadership Summit

Toronto, Ontario

What a thrill!  Alison McGavigan and I proudly celebrated Canada when delegates from over 70 CREW chapters of the United States, Canada and the UK gathered in Toronto for the 2017 Spring Leadership Summit. The Toronto CREW Chapter members were out in force throughout the two days, staffing hostess tables for activities information, arranging reservations and participating in the formal summit program. They were awesome hosts and certainly made us proud to be Canadian. One of the highlights of the sessions for me included seeing Tara Piurko, 2017 CREW Network President –Elect on the podium.  Tara is a past president of Toronto CREW and will be the first Canadian president of CREW Network. It was great to experience this in her hometown.

The summit program itself was jam-packed with great advice, best practices and a great lens into the network of the talented pool of professionals available to all of us through the extensive CREW network. Each and every touchpoint I had with so many delegates demonstrated a true passion to contribute to the personal growth and business success at an individual level. So invigorating!

Staying with tradition, the Canadian Chapters held our own short delegate meeting to focus on issues and practices unique to the Canadian environment. CREW Saskatoon is newly formed and has been a recognized Chapter for less than a year. Their delegate was so very complementary to our Edmonton Chapter for all the assistance, advice and support that has been instrumental in their success thus far. Thank you to our members who have given so selflessly; I can’t imagine a better compliment of our Chapter culture and the individuals who create it.

We had a great development training session on authentic leadership skills led by author Cheryl Cran. She led us through a few exercises to explore our personal leadership lens and to become more self- aware of our perspective and how to master a multiple-lens view to create transformational teams and inspiration. George Pincus, a very engaging real estate attorney shared with us some very practical and proven tips and strategies to use in negotiating a successful deal. We each then opened a sealed envelope with specific case facts as a buyer or a seller and had a go at making a deal! It was interesting to learn what contributed, what happened and what the push and pull points were that resulted in successful negotiations as well as what happened when a deal could not come to fruition.

Overall, the leadership summit was a remarkable experience and tremendous resource of valuable advice. Give it a go yourself at any of the upcoming events:
  • 2017 Fall Convention on October 25th in Houston, Texas
  • 2018 Winter on February 1 in  Tucson, Arizona
  • 2018 Spring on June 21 in Cleveland, Ohio.
