Time to stand up for scientific integrity 

Following the conviction of seven Italian scientists for manslaughter in the wake of the 2009 earthquakes in the Italian town of L’Aquila, Staff Association President Dr Michael Borgas discusses how a new campaign for a Scientific Integrity Charter will help protect and advance public sector science. Small boat research wrecked by new maritime laws? 

New national maritime laws - due to take effect from January 2013 - could make field research more difficult, especially for scientists using small boats in protected waters. Changes to the certification required for commercial operators include logging 200 sea hours - even to take out the humble tinnie. More here

Hendra breakthrough 

The announcement that the first equine vaccine for the deadly Hendra virus is now available has been welcomed, with the Australian Veterinary Association declaring it a "great day for horses". Based on the ground breaking research of the Australian Animal Health Laboratory, CSIRO has developed the vaccine in collaboration with a major drug manufacturer. Read the report from ABC online here

AGM Reminder notice 

A quick reminder the 2012 Annual General Meeting (AGM) will be held at CSIRO Clayton on Thursday 6 December, commencing at 11am. It is a Fair Work Australia requirement that we notify all members at least 21 days in advance of the AGM and provide full access to our Financial and Operating Reports.
