Spring registration is coming soon

Consider the range of courses offered in Spring 2014 that contribute to the Asian Studies minor. Need a writing course? You can take REL 419 on the Tales of Asia. Interested in Chinese literature (read in translation), take CHI 350. Do you find politics and India/Pakistan interesting, sign up for PSC 483. If Japan or issues of gender/sexuality is more of your thing, you can take HY 400 Gender and Sexuality in Japan. Do you like films dealing with Asian themes? Consider taking JA 357 or HY 300 (Popular Culture in Japan) or REL 419.

Asian Studies T-shirts

We now have Asian Studies T-shirts! Asian Studies minors and others interested in Asian Studies should talk to the Director of Asian Studies to get one and promote Asian Studies around the Capstone.

Surveys of Asia in Spring 2014

Two of the survey courses that satisfy the six hours of specific course requirements for the Asian Studies minor will be offered in Spring 2014.

ARH 254 Survey of Asian Art
HY 244 Modern Asia Since 1500.

Even if you aren't a minor, these courses provide a good overview of Asian Studies. Wait, why aren't you a minor? You ought to sign up or talk to the Director of Asian Studies to see how the requirements fit your academic program.


Foreign Study and Scholarships

It is not too early to think about going to Asia this summer. Multiple UA programs are being considered, so we will have more news soon about opportunities to travel in different parts of Asia with a UA faculty member.

And, multiple funding opportunities exist, including the Miyagawa and Ron Robel Scholarships (specifically preferencing UA students going to Asia) and the Gilman and Fulbright programs. For more details, check out the Asian Studies website and the Capstone International's Money Matters page.

Minor requirements

  • 18 hours total
  • 2 general courses on Asia (ARH 254, HY 243, HY 244, REL 220)
  • 2 Upper level courses on Asia
  • 2 elective courses on Asia
  • 2 semesters of Asian language (not counted in 18 hours unless over 300 level)
