Upcoming Lectures

Save the date for two upcoming lectures on Asia!

The Department of Religious Studies is hosting a lecture March 4 at 7:00 pm in Gorgas Library 205. Prof. Richard King of the University of Kent will present "From Mysticism to Spirituality: Colonial Legacies and the Reformation of the 'Mystic East'".

The Asian Studies Honors Lecture will be April 1 at 3:30 in Woods 115. Dr. Nikhil Bilwakesh from UA's English Department will lecture on "W.D. Fard and the Unincorporated Margin of South Asian America," and the Asian Studies Research and Outstanding Student Awards will be presented.

Asia Is . . .

Urban. Over 1.75 billion people live in urban areas of Asia, making up one quarter of the world's population. And, seven of the ten largest cities in the world are in Asia.

These urban populations are increasingly connected to the world through technology. The opportunities for and importance of learning about this region that we have labeled Asia are increasing constantly. Don't miss out!

Approaching Foreign Study Deadlines

This summer's foreign study programs in India, China and Japan have application deadlines as early as March 1. Lots of the available scholarships to fund study abroad also have deadlines approaching. If you are on a Pell Grant, check out the Gilman Scholarship Program, whose application for summer is due in early March. Scholarships offered through UA include the Miyagawa Scholarship and the Ron Robel Scholarship.
