Message From the President

Dear Colleagues,

Welcome to issue #30  of KICconnect, the first issue of 2021.

I would like to start by wishing you all a very happy New Year. I hope you have had an enjoyable and restful Winter Break.

As we enter the next decade, I am hopeful of a productive and healthy year ahead. COVID-19 continues to affect all our lives, but with a vaccine now widely available in all Emirates, and with strict adherence to our health and safety protocols, we will be working hard to minimise the negative effects on our Community. Currently, we will continue our learning and teaching online/blended mode in line with the Ministry of Education directives.

We have a busy semester ahead of us. This week we held our first Open Day of the year, for prospective students. We continue to recruit new members of faculty, we have been working on submissions for the re-accreditation of Business Administration, Health Management, Computer Graphics and Animation, and Mass Communication programmes. We will also be working on the submission of applications for new programmes, especially those from the Health and Medical Sciences Department. Internal audits of our academic departments start next week as we strive to continuously improve our service delivery.

I am pleased to announce a unique initiative in support of our students of determination in collaboration with the UAE Red Crescent. The Red Crescent kindly provided KIC with a donation link that can be accessed directly from our website.

We have had a successful first implementation of Blue Explorance, with student survey responses higher than ever before. I would like to encourage students to participate in surveys as we value your opinions on your learning journey and your responses are used to improve the quality of our courses and services.

This semester sees the launch of the new standing committee structure at KIC, an important tool to strengthen the governance of the College. The Institutional Quality, Effectiveness and Accreditation Department (IQEA) will lead the initiative for implementation.

Final exams for Fall Semester have now started. I would like to thank the Admissions and Registration Departments and the academic departments for all the effort they put into organising the exams. I wish all our students every success in their exams.

 Against COVID-19

How Machine Learning will Address the Pandemic?

Innovation@UAE Magazine, Issue 1.
December, 2020

Dr. Santosh Ray, Head /Associate Professor, KIC IT Department, has collaborated on a project that aims to predict confirmed COVID-19 cases.

"Knowing the accurate number of COVID patients in advance will help hospitals and local governments to prepare themselves well to serve COVID patients in an effective manner," commented Dr. Ray. "Deep learning models usually make inaccurate predictions if they are trained with insufficient data. Therefore, in the circumstances where sufficient data is not available especially during the first few months of COVID pandemic, classical machine learning models trained on different types of data such as times series data, social media data, etc. may be combined to predict the number of confirmed cases. "

The project was led by Dr. Amir Ahmad, Associate Professor of Information Systems and Security in the College of Information Technology at United Arab Emirates University (UAEU), in collaboration with international researchers.

The team conducted a meta-analysis of associated COVID-19 case-prediction models to propose performance improvements, by leveraging machine learning to predict COVID-19 cases, and ultimately address the global pandemic.

Predicting COVID-19 cases is crucial to controlling the pandemic. Accurate predictions enable concerned decision-makers to optimize planning and carry out effective countermeasures.

However, according to Dr. Amir Ahmad, current prediction models are limited, and these limitations should be addressed.

The team published a paper on their work in the journal Archives of Computational Methods in Engineering.

Tête-à-Tête

Featuring Mr. Abdul Muqsit, Digital Specialist, Marketing Department.

What are you most curious about in life?
I’m curious to learn about aviation & astronomy although these fields are not closely related to what I do but I am constantly reading, watching & learning stuff related to them.

I have deep concern about rapid changes going around the globe & the consequences of those occurrences such as climate change, AI/ML & shortage of resources.

What are the failures that you most cherish?
I run various startups & online stores for the last 10 years, there are some of them which failed due to a lack of proper research & findings. The takeaway from those failures was to spend 75% of the time on research &  25% only on implementation. Following these rules, my last two startups are performing very well compared to the ones that failed.

If you could go back five years, what advice would you give your younger self?
Invest your time and efforts in building a passive business, give proper timing to that plant; the time your retire the plant will become a fruitful tree to give you shelter in hard times.
Small but regular steps make big differences in our lives.
What do you do outside of the work environment?
I run a few online stores, a small agency offering various services in my spare time. Part of daily routine includes research & development, playing chess, running a small youtube channel & time with family.

What is the most courageous thing you have done in your life?
Once, I represented my country in two software competition in India/Pakistan. Won both international awards in 2014/2015 by presenting a multi-functional dictionary that works offline, online, mobile & desktop simultaneously. Winning in Pakistan & selected to represent my country in Indonesia in another competition on Asia level.

What is your favourite film/series and why?
Interstellar & Dirilis Ertugrul are my favorite movies. I watched Interstellar 5 times while Ertugrul 2 times because Ertugrul is around 400 Episodes on the history of the Ottoman Empire.

Tips & Trivia

Al-Khwarizmi: Becoming Famous

Muḥammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi,  was a mathematician, astronomer, geographer, and scholar. However, it is mathematics that brought him to fame.

He wrote a book on algebra, and a book on calculation that introduced to Europe the Hindu-Arabic numerals and the ways to do arithmetics with them.

2021's Resolutions!

How to Stay Committed!

Have you decided on your 2021 resolutions? If yes, here are three tips to make your plans come to life:

  1. Tip #1: Tell People about your Resolutions.  Once you tell others about your upcoming projects, you consciously commit to them. It is kind of a verbal contract towards which you’ll feel obligated.
  2. Tip #2: Clarify Your Resolutions.  To attain your New Year Resolutions, be sure that they are clear enough.
  3. Tip #3: Stop focusing on the End Result. It sounds counterintuitive, but you do not have to focus on the end result. For example, if you plan to learn painting, it is important to understand that it is an extremely long process without shortcuts. Learn to enjoy the journey, rather than blindly stampeding towards the destination.  The journey is what matters.
