Sir Malcolm Sargent

The children's choir at Stamford All Saints’ Church (Red Lion Square) is hosting a children’s celebration of Sir Malcolm Sargent, one of Stamford's illustrious former citizens. We should like to make the event special by having a big choir of 7 to 12 year-olds join us and make a joyful noise. Please come if you can - for previous events quite a few competition participants came and sang.

There are two Friday rehearsals at All Saints’
  • Friday 29th September at  6-7 pm
  • Friday 6th October at  6-7 pm
Then on Sunday 8th October there is a 3:30pm rehearsal for the celebration at 5pm. Click here for full details.

If the children enjoy taking part in that celebration, they would be welcome to stay and sing for our annual Pet Service a week later on Sunday 15th October.

For Sir Malcolm, we have some “Last Night of the Proms” songs to join in, appearances by school and church choirs, and young soloists who won trophies at the Stamford Music Competition earlier in the year. Some ‘old choristers’ who sang at the funeral itself 50 years ago, will also be taking part. Admission is free with collection in aid of Clic Sargent - for children with cancer.
Sargent’s funeral was held at All Saints, so it is right that we should be hosting an event as part of the town’s marking of the 50th anniversary of his death. Also, although he spent his life at the highest performance levels, he never forgot about children starting out, and making music. His recording of Britten’s Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra, is still a classic. He would have been proud that so many children are taking part in this celebration, with the collection going to his charity for children with cancer.
