Last week, Leila and Michelle—co-founders of BIOMILQ—announced that they had produced human breastmilk outside the body

We were especially pumped about BIOMILQ's news because Isha, our executive director, is a new mother herself. Also, because New Harvest makes a cameo appearance in the company's story! 


Four years ago, we received an email from a "chemist-turned-game programmer" in North Carolina who wanted to produce a cup of mammary cell-cultured milk. 

He called it...cellufacturing

As fate would have it, Isha and an intern were already scheduled to fly to North Carolina the following month to visit one of our research fellows at NC State University

Three weeks later, Leila (the chemist-turned-game programmer's wife, a cellular biologist, and the true protagonist of this story) picked Isha up from Raleigh-Durham International Airport and regaled her with colorful accounts of sourcing "steaming" udders from freshly slaughtered cows for initial experiments.

Although New Harvest didn't fund her project, we did provide initial support during a time when everyone else looked at Leila like she was crazy. In large part, this meant showing her that a community did exist who was passionate about this work (albeit small and distributed around the world).

Leila was one of the original attendees at our inaugural 2016 conference in SF, and then we didn't hear from her again until 2019 when she came to our Boston conference. 

Last week, Leila emailed with exciting news: she had confirmed the presence of casein and lactose in milk produced from isolated human mammary cells! 

Thus concludes New Harvest's cameo appearance in BIOMILQ's (ongoing!) story, the rest of which you can read about here :)

    • This year's Alternative Protein Show is April 22-24 in Singapore!! If you've been keeping up with cell ag news, you know that Singapore is abuzz with activity as companies like Shiok Meats and Turtle Tree Labs announce breakthrough after breakthrough. 
  • Finally, the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia, is hiring two postdocs to drive cellular agriculture research in the School of Chemical Engineering.
