Centering learner voices

The 8th Annual CAST UDL Symposium: Learner Voice. Start streaming now! #UDLvoice
This year’s Symposium amplified the voices of learners, particularly those who have been most marginalized by traditional educational systems. Learners’ voices must be lifted and made central to how we engage, teach, and assess learners, because each and every voice enriches learning for all. Our partners at Texthelp published a blog post focused on this year's Symposium and highlighted some key takeaways. Also, visit the #UDLvoice Social Highlights to catch up with all the great online conversations. Access the on-demand content for this virtual learning and networking experience filled with connected conversations that elevate your thinking around UDL and learner voice.

Examining expert learning

UDL Guidelines icon with text: #UDLrising
As part of our UDL Rising to Equity initiative to reenvision the UDL Guidelines through an equity lens, we’re working on updating the notion of expert learning. We’re exploring the work of researchers including H. Samy Alim, Gloria Ladson-Billings, Jean Lave, Django Paris, Étienne Wenger, and so many more! We’re also generating ideas for changes with our Advisory Board, Stakeholder Council, and numerous focus group participants. This process has surfaced initial ideas for proposed changes:
  • Broaden “expert learning” to include learner agency
  • Recognize and value diverse ways of engaging, knowing, and sharing understanding
  • Emphasize the importance of learning in community and collectively generating knowledge
Thoughts? Reactions? What are other update ideas on your mind? Join the conversation on Twitter using the #UDLrising hashtag.

Launching a career guidance curriculum in dual enrollment programs

Screenshot of the Biofab Explorer tool
CAST is launching a new career guidance curriculum to support recruitment and persistence in STEM education for students underrepresented in STEM careers. In collaboration with the Advanced Regenerative Manufacturing Institute and a group of CTE schools with dual enrollment programs, the new curriculum will include work-based learning simulations to allow students to explore careers and build skills relevant for STEM technician jobs in biofabrication. This will be embedded in Biofab Explorer and the e-Portfolio — two digital tools created by CAST — and reflect Universal Design for Learning principles, providing options for access, representation, and engagement for students.
