Cornwall Peer Support
News 2016

Six of Cornwalls Breastfeeding Peer Support Volunteers received awards for long service and commitment at the recent Real Baby Milk Infant feeding conference, held in Mid Cornwall last month.
Starting from left: Rev. Arwen Folkes presenting the awards to Peer supporters  Emma Parma from Hayle & St Ives; Laura Longworth-Riggs from Truro & Treliske Hospital; Becky Osborne from Hayle & St Ives; Lisa Kirkpatrick from Falmouth; Steph Attwood from Mama's Milk St Austell; Vickie Culshaw from Redruth Bosom Buddies and Treliske Hospital and Brian O'Neill Consultant in Public Health for Children.

The Real Baby Milk team would like to thank everyone that supported and attended the Infant Feeding Conference, on Saturday 25th September. Over 60 peer supporters and health care professionals came together to listen and talk about supporting breastfeeding within Cornwall!

Brian O’Neill, Consultant in Public Health for children, opened the conference by sharing his experience of supporting a partner to breastfeed from a Father’s perspective. This year marks the 10th anniversary of Real Baby Milk, so special guest Rev. Arwen Folkes spoke about the humble beginnings and growth of Real Baby Milk. Naomi Stadlen, Author of What Mothers Do and How Mothers Love, ended the speeches by leading an interactive session listening to audience members experiences of being needed as a mother. Delegates then dispersed into 4 workshops on Fundraising and Sustaining Peer Support Groups, Maximising Breastmilk, Milk sharing and Introducing Solid Foods.

During the course of the day there was plenty of opportunities over tea and cake, to network between different peer support groups and health care professionals. The conference was concluded with a question and answer session, led by Rev. Arwen Folkes and a panel of health care professionals, answering the audience’s questions on the ongoing relationship building between volunteers & healthcare professionals and the future of breastfeeding support in Cornwall.

Ten Peer Supporters are currently training in Camborne at the Troon Children's Centre.  Real Baby Milk have been commissioned to deliver three training sessions a year, from July 2015 until June 2018.  The following courses have been successfully delivered in Liskeard Sept 2015; Truro September 2015; Launceston January 2016; St Dennis April 2016; and currently in Troon.

The remaining sessions are planned for Bodmin November 2016; Truro April 2017; and Saltash September 2017.  One more course is planned with the location yet to be decided.

Cornwall's latest review of The Essential Guide to Caring and feeding for your baby is now available.  Please contact the office if you would like a reference copy for your group.

The guide now includes baby wearing guidance for families.  Real Baby Milk are currently compiling a list of safe sign posting routes for Peer Supporters to refer families needing further support and information on baby wearing.  If you have information to add to the list then please email by 10th November 2016.  We will then be able to cross check with our information, share with Children Centres, Peer Support groups and identify any gaps in support int he Cornwall.

Real Baby Milk is 10 this year, we is looking to build up a bank of reviews in our shop.  If you have seen our DVDs either recently in training or have used them as a resource for mums then we would love some more reviews. Simply click in the shop and into a product, and scroll down to add a review.  Thank you for your support.
