Earth Week Activities

CELEBRATING EARTH WEEK GATOR STYLE! As one of the greenest schools in the country, Grand View will be doing its part to celebrate Earth Week. Students will participate in various green activities and will learn about ways they can help the environment. Here's what you need to know:

EARTH WEEK THEMES
Make-a-Difference-Monday: PLASTICS. Have your child bring in a reusable water bottle Monday and all week long. Water Challenge forms go home.
Trash-Free-Tuesday: WASTE. Waste reduction and sorting.
Walk/Wheel-to-School-Wednesday: AIR. Doing our part to reduce air pollution.
Thirsty-Thursday: WATER. Why we need to be water-conscious. Water Challenge forms due.
Friday is Earth Day: PLEDGE. Wear green or blue. Students will discuss in class what they can do on a day-to-day basis to help the environment.

ESSAY CONTEST ENTRIES DUE 4/19 Grades of Green invites students to write an essay (450 words or fewer) explaining why the new hydration stations are a good idea. Turn in essays to the front office by 4/19. The winner will receive a prize and the chance to read his or her essay over the loudspeaker on 4/22.

SHOE DRIVE Gator Giving and Grades of Green will host a shoe drive this week. The used shoes will be given to Soles4Souls which will donate wearable shoes to those in need, and will send the rest to be upcycled into playground material. Please drop off shoes in the bins in the PTA room by 4/22.

FRIDAY IS EARTH DAY - CELEBRATE WITH FRESH VEGGIES! HULA HOOPING!! PRIZES!!! Bring your hula hoop or use one of ours for heaps of hula hoop fun with VIP referee Ms. Wood! See if you can last longer than Champion Hula Hooper Mrs. Steinberg! The last one standing from each grade will receive a frozen treat at the ice cream window. There will be lots of fresh veggies harvested from the children's garden available for purchase (cash only). Upper playground, 2:45-3:30pm.

BEACH CLEAN-UP 4/23 Gator Giving and Grades of Green encourage all Gators to help with the Earth Day Beach Clean-Up south of the Pier from 10am-noon. Wear your Gator Green and show our community why Grand View is a National Green Ribbon School! The event is hosted by Surfrider Foundation and the Manhattan Beach Library.
 

GV Teacher of the Year!

CONGRATULATIONS TO MS. WOOD! We are proud to announce that P.E. teacher Monica Wood has been selected by her peers as the Grand View Teacher of the Year. Monica teaches by example that Character Counts in everything we say and do. She connects with each child on a personal level, creating an environment of support by sending encouraging postcards and by attending students' extracurricular events. We are so proud to have Monica represent our school as she next competes for MBUSD Teacher of the Year.
 

50th Annual Spring Fair 5/14

10AM-3PM - UPPER PLAYGROUND Featuring the fabulous talent show, tasty eats from local restaurants, game booths, inflatables, the YAA Gallery showcasing your child's artwork, and much more!

CHILI COOK OFF Dust off that crock pot, test that secret family recipe, and enter the Chili Cook Off! Contestants please contact Amanda Zaumeyer or Ali Snyder.

BOOK SALE BOOTH Drop off used children's and adult books in the Library hall, or in the collection boxes at the flag pole and at the Bell Avenue entrance. DVDs and CDs are accepted, but please no VHS tapes, encyclopedias, textbooks, or magazines. Questions? Email Rochelle Cistone.

NEW THIS YEAR The awesome Yoobi Arts & Crafts bus will be at our Fair. Yoobi sparks learning and creativity while also giving back -- for every Yoobi item you purchase, a Yoobi item is donated to a U.S. classroom in need.
 

Gator Run Art Contest

CONTEST WINNER Thank you to the talented artists who submitted entries! With over 100 outstanding submissions, selecting one finalist was a challenge! The Gator Run Committee is pleased to announce that the artwork of Ella Luthro was selected to appear on t-shirts, banners, and communications. Congratulations to three runners up: Raina Dowler, Caitlyn O'Hara, and a collaborative effort by Henry Disser and Tillie and Mac Lamkin. All entries are on display in the Library hall and will be returned to the artists after the Gator Run event.
 

Run Club

WE LOVE OUR STATS! Kids, take a bow! You have run 4,338 accumulated miles, the equivalent of running 166 marathons, or of running all the way to Lima, Peru! Run Club's highest priority is participation, and the two classes tied with the highest participation last week were Olson/Leweke and Pliaconis. Everyone is welcome! M-W-F 7:45-8:05am.
 

5th Grade Roundtable 4/27

JUST FOR KIDS 5th graders are invited to a morning roundtable to hear about life at MBMS from former Grand View Gators. A light breakfast will be served. Drop-offs are OK. 4/27 in the PAC from 7:30-8:05am.
 

Manhattan Village Receipts Due 4/30

RALPHS, CVS, FRY'S, RESTAURANTS, ETC. Log receipts from Manhattan Village dated between 5/1/15 and 4/30/16 to earn money for GV. Bring your original cash register receipts to the Concierge Booth and earn at least five points per dollar spent. Click for details. Questions? Email Bobbie Kokorowski.

April Fundraiser

SAFE BEAUTY PRODUCTS In honor of Earth Day GV mom Betty Law will donate 15% of her April Beautycounter sales to our school. For more info or to sample a product call Betty at 310-507-4581.
 

Wanted: Plastic Caps

BOTTLE CAPS FOR ART Help save the environment and beautify GV at the same time! Our Student Council needs plastic bottle caps of all colors for an art project to be unveiled at the 5th grade promotion. Drop them off in the front office by 5/13.
 

Blood Drive 5/3
