Headmaster Message

Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction

(Please excuse my dear Aunt Sally)

Given the frequent bad news associated with math education and American students, it may be hard to believe that American students just won the 56th International Mathematical Olympiad, defeating the Chinese, Koreans, and Russians for the first time in 21 years. Furthermore, our coaches say that the number of master mathematicians on the United States bench is deeper than it has ever been.

But how does this square with the almost simultaneous reporting of the most recent results from the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS)?

Development Update

We noticed that 26 readers clicked the Development Update in Crossties last week to learn how we’re doing. Realizing spring break was on everyone’s mind, we thought we’d share it again. A major function of the Development Department is to raise money for our school - for our academic, art, and athletic programs and in support of the school’s operations. We do this through the Annual Fund and two fundraisers each fiscal year, and the total we must raise this year for these three is $450,000.

To learn more, click the button below to read about our year-to-date goals, our results, and what you can do to help.

Summer Programs

The 2016 Summer Program catalog is now available online. Two new academic camps, both offered by fifth grade teacher and licensed reading specialist Lisa Cone, have been recently added to the 2016 catalog.

  • Vocabulary Camp: Rising 5th-8th grade students can prevent summer academic loss with a fun “camp” in which students explore the wonderful world of words through games, engaging hands-on activities, and the creation of exciting skits!
  • Comprehension Clinic: Rising 3rd-5th grade students will cultivate the comprehension skills they learned throughout the school year by reading high-interest stories and participating in reader’s theater, all while having a great time and enjoying fun stories with friends.

Visit the Summer Programs page on the school website, or download a catalog for more information. The application is also available as a download.  If you have specific questions about Summer Programs, please contact Stephen Belderes at (540) 588-8320.

Counseling Update

Submitted by Leigh Ann Hamlin, Director of Counseling

My first year as the Director of Counseling at North Cross School has been exciting as well as rewarding. The first half of the year was geared toward the following character themes: honesty, cooperation, courage, compassion, and respect. Students in the Lower School have been encouraged to think critically about each trait and give examples of how each trait is intertwined in their daily lives. More recently, the month of February was dedicated specifically toward sportsmanship. Upper school students shared their own experiences of sportsmanship with the lower school students. They discussed experiences from when they were their age, as well as recent encounters of positive sportsmanship here at North Cross School.
